Modern-day art is very different from the traditional art. It's minimal, more thought through and well researched and is definitely, out-of-the-box. Time and again, we make it a point of sharing such interesting and compelling modern-day art work on our blog.

Meet Andrew Myers who is hailed as one of the most patient modern-day sculptors around.

Andrew is a California-based artist who was born in Braunshweig, Germany and was raised in Ciudad Real, Spain, is known all over the world for creating incredible portraits with screws. The artist first starts the process by placing the pages of a phone-book on top of a plywood panel and draws out a face and pre-drills holes onto it and then drills in the screws to make the portrait.

Jacob Everett is a London-based artist and illustrator who has given a new meaning to the proverb - 'Pen is mightier than sword'. Not that he writes great words but give him a pen and he would create for you a portrait.

Everett creates photo-realistic portraits by overlapping elliptical patterns, using nothing but a ball point pen.

According to him, "I produce large-scale portraits using an intricate technique of overlapping elliptical marks, which gradually build to represent the subtle contours of the face."

Everett accentuates every little feature of the face by drawing loops. He concentrates on every part of the face, one section at a time and spends several weeks on a single piece. He has drawn  portraits of celebrities and homeless people from the streets of Bradford.

Finding Benjamin Kyle

Posted: 12/23/2012
Benjamin Kyle has no or very little memory of his life prior to Aug 31 st, 2004 when he was found around dumpsters behind a Burger King joint.

64 year old Benjamin Kyle suffers from something known as dissociative amnesia. He was found with injuries on this head, almost blind with no idea of how he got there and without any identification papers. Therefore, the authorities couldn't give him a social security number, due to which he couldn't get a job or register to a homeless shelter.

It truly is a uniquely sad story of a man who has no idea where more than half of his life went, and to make matters worth, his future seems to be as blurred as his past. And this where art came into the picture.

Chinese street artist Chen Yingjie aka 'Hua Tunan' has an amazing talent of creating intricate portraits from utter chaos. Twisted Swifter likes to put it as 'organized confusion at its finest'.

Tunan is a classical Chinese painter and illustrator, and when it comes to street art, he has a style of his own. He beautifully brings together the style of graffiti and traditional Chinese style of painting.

Needless to say that creating portraits from the method of splattering paint can be quite a task and making it look so surreal and expressive can only come from genuine talent.

Have a look at some of his amazing work:

When it comes to creating portraits of famous people, a lot of artists tend to take an unconventional (and some times bizarre) approach. David Palmer for example, created bullet portraits as a tribute to famous personalities. Daniel Edlen on the other hand, pays his tribute to musicians by creating their portraits on vinyl records.

Today we would like to share a little humorous approach by Dito von Tease who has taken our childhood joy of "finger puppetry" to a whole new level; he likes to call it 'Ditology'. ('Dito' is Italian for 'finger')

He has beautifully created portraits of well known personalities and fictional characters on human fingers. Of course, the images have been digitally manipulated and Tease has done a wonderful job in detailing these portraits and bringing a smile to our face. :)

Here are some of my favorites:

So what happens when you decide to explore South America after a semester with the National Outdoor Leadership School in Patagonia - you explore new places, learn about other cultures, meet new people, fall in love and end up moving to a beautiful place like Argentina. That's what happened with our artist of the week, Antrese Wood.

Antrese was born and raised in Southern California; she completed her graduation from the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena and worked over a decade in the video game division with Disney. She moved to Argentina, two years back and is currently living there. Antrese loves travelling and painting and her work has been exhibited in galleries across US and Argentina. Her paintings are amazing, especially the ones from 'A Portrait of Argentina' series.

Creating art with musicians as subject is quite common, but what's uncommon is the way an idea is executed using unique materials. There have been portraits created in vinyl records and as well from recycled cassette tapes.

This time, it's CDs that have been used to create portraits of musicians like Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley, Bob Marley, Jimmy Hendrix, Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury and James Brown.

The portraits are created using original CDs of these musicians greatest hits. Have a look:

Recycling is one of my favorite subjects to write about. It is quite interesting to see how artists create something outstanding with an item that would, otherwise, be of no use. One such artist is Mary Ellen Croteau, based in Chicago, who works in different disciplines and vivid mediums to bring forward the unreasonable social norms.

Drawing inspiration from Chuck Close's lifelike painted portraits, Mary has created a self-portrait from thousands of recycled plastic bottle caps. Mary initially intended to create an endless column of these caps but ended up creating a self portrait. This amazing piece measures 8 feet by 7 feet.

It is giant, looks beautiful with colorful caps and extremely artistic. And of course, it is a commentary on using non-recyclable products in our daily lives that makes it much more appealing.

Cristina Otero is a 16 year old, extremely creative photographer from Spain who has created her very tasty self-portrait series called: Tutti Frutty.

Ever since she understood the wonders of Photoshop, she very smartly combined it with her creative and unique make-up skills. She has been sharing her art work on Deviant Art for quite a while now and has managed to gather quite an impressive following.

It is refreshing to see young artists not only creating wonderful artwork but also opening up to the their fans, rather than pretentiously hiding in solitude. "City Silhouettes" is a photography series by Beijing based photographer James Jasper. It is a comment on larger number of people living in urban areas than in rural areas. This series has wonderful portraits of city dwellers blended with the image of cityskapes in background.

The technique involved in creating them is really fascinating. No, they are not digitally manipulated. "The images are made in camera with just a basic adjustment in contrast and colours but no retouching," explains artist. For producing this awesome silhouette effect, James captured the shadows of people on glass windows exposed to cityscapes.

These photographs have been taken in various cities around Asia in last few years. Have a look at some of my favorite shots:

Couple of months back we'd featured a Mohammad Ali's portrait that was created using 1300 boxing speed bags. Today we'd like to share another creative homage to a sportsperson: ex-NBA superstar, Yao Ming.

Hong Yi, a very creative artist, quite fascinatingly used a basketball and color red to create Yao Ming's portrait.

After releasing a video of her working on this portrait, Hong experienced an overwhelming social media experience, here what she has to say:

"Next thing I knew, my views shot up from 12k to 50k in a matter of a few hours, and the video was featured on the Huffington Post and Yahoo and NBC! I couldn't wrap my head around what was gong on before my eyes. The next crazy thing: Good Morning America and ABC news contacted me to request permission to show the video on their channels! I'm totally blown away by the power of social media." Check out the video below:

Stephen Kline is a Florida based artist who draws detailed portraits of dogs using text of their breeds. For instance, he draws the portrait of a dalmatian by writing the name 'dalmatian' repeatedly within the portrait. He has created lithographs of almost every breed and each one of them looks brilliant and realistic. Placing the text just at the right place to give a particular look is not a child's play; demanding full focus and time.

"Stephen Kline, internationally known artist, has created a new technique using lines of language to make fascinating and charming lithographs of your favorite dogs, exotic animals, and Santa. Hand-signed and numbered in editions of 500, this art is created by writing the name of the subject over and over. Kline adds additional words with gold and silver applied pen-and-ink, making each print an original piece of art", as described on his website.

Here's a short interview with Stephen below with some of the examples of his awesome work:
