The name says it all. One of these days, looking out for some creative start-ups this year, I stumbled upon this small charity-oriented, a do good start up from Australia. And trust me the whole concept is absolutely genius.

In the digital age of ebooks and tablets, where any information, book, novels, poetry and any kind of literature is at a click's distance, there still is a large part of the world that is bereft of enjoying this treasure trove of knowledge called - Books!

Yes, many of us take this pleasure so much for granted while for others reading a book is almost a thing of luxury. I'm sure book lovers like me understand the depth of this passion for reading that hardcover and more so owning it too. Now here's another sad side of the emerging culture of reading globally. For one, you cannot distinguish who a real reader is, for there are many who simply like to deck up their shelves with the latest books, only to never read them actually! Collector's fetish is what I call it.

As a movement against such close minded attitudes, the Australia-based ad agency BMF in collaboration with The Footpath Library and Random House, launched Mailbooks For Good earlier this year.

The Footpath Library is a mobile library with a team of dedicated volunteers who collect and distribute books to the homeless and disadvantaged who do not have access to them. Mailbooks For Good just took this cause just a step further. A book cover mailing service, they help delivering books to those in need of it. Once a reader is through reading a book and doesn't wish to pile on his bookshelves with extras, all they have to mail it to these folks.

An evolving concept still, Mailbooks For Good, offer specific book titles with foldable cover to preserve them from dust and all kinds of likely damage. The users simply unwrap and fold the book in the cover that resembles an enlarged mailing envelop. Books -  big, medium or small in size absolutely fit the design covers. Saving as much as 10% of posting costs, the books are sent over to charitable organizations involved in literacy drives around Australia. They are eventually looking to take the concept to other countries as well.

For starts, they made the patented design covers for 5 titles only :

Crack Hardy – Stephen Dando-Collins
Wanting - Richard Flanagan
And Now for Some Light Relief - Peter Fitzsimons
The Fix – Nick Earls
Bureau of Mysteries – H. J. Harper

However the response to the cause has been so positive that the Team expects to cross over the 10,000 collection stock mark by the end of 2013. Alex Caredes, one of the founding members attributes the success of their initiative to their core value of positive community outreach and the sheer "use of the patented design innovation free to all non-profit organizations, charitable organizations and literacy programs".

There is no bigger gift than that of sharing knowledge through books. If you are one of those who believes in extending that hand of knowledge, you too can join Mail For Good's cause and work. Just visit their website to leave details of organisations/charities that are involved in spreading literacy.

Honestly, the cause is worth the effort. "Re-gift the gift of reading" now!!
