1. Hi Avihai, please introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Avihai Shurin and I'm a Product & Industrial designer. I'm the owner of Avihai Shurin | Product Design Studio. And I also teach and lecture about Industrial Design and Creative Thinking.
My studio specializes in designing unique and surprising everyday products, combining sharp design, humor and original perspective. Believing that small products makes big smile!
Additionally, the studio designing "one off" projects, featured in exhibitions around the world.
2. What inspired you to become a designer and for how long have you been in this field?
I love to make people smile, and for me, the best way is with an everyday products, that will make you happy every time you see them.
The studio recently celebrated its second anniversary, but some of my products were also available in the local market during the time I was a design student.
3. What motivates you to design these innovative products? Can you take us through the creative journey that you undertake for designing each product?
Woooo, that's a big question (:I think the most inspiring thing for me are people. How they are eating? What are they doing in the morning? etc..
A good example of this fact is one of my newest products, Bites & Pieces that I designed for Fred & Friends. I asked myself "What children (or grown-ups with an inner child) are doing with their sandwiches?" "Why not playing with your food?" etc… (:
4. Personally speaking, I love your products! One of my personal favorites is the Desk Flower. What prompted you to come up with it?
Thanks (;The Desk Flower is a part of another aspect of my studio. We also provide design and development services to private customers and companies.
It was a product specially designed for a sales promotion company, who wanted to have an innovative desk object, with several features.
The flower has 4 uses: the petals are sticky index flags, the green leaves are sticky memo notes,
the back side of the base is business cards holder, and the pot storage place helps you keep your desk tidy and organized.
5. What do you love working on the most - commissioned work or personal work and how do you manage time for the both?
I usually work on things that I love and that make me happy. I believe that if I love the product I design, it will affect both on the product and on the costumer, and will create the best result.I think it's important to be very honest, and if I feel that a product will not make me happy, I prefer to tell the costumer "It's not my cup of tea". I believe that in the end it will make him happy as well.
Time for both?
Designing products takes more time than people think (: So I'm working on a tight schedule, months ahead, organized by "dead-lines" like trade fairs, time to manufacturer... etc.
6. I know this question is just like asking a mother who is her favorite kid, but just out of curiosity amongst all your products which one is your favorite and why?
Well you are right, it is (: Usually my favorites are the newest products.
Right now it's the SunnySide Egg Shaper, (that was also featured here, on E-junkie). The SunnySide is a silicone-shaper that will make your breakfast shine (:
7. How do you see the advent of eCommerce and now mCommerce? Share with us your experience as an etailer.
Frankly, I think it's amazing. One of the greatest compliments for me is knowing that I was able to make people from all over the world appreciate the humor in a product, and loving what they're buying, no matter where they are living. The mCommerce, in my opinion, is still not as easy as her big sister the eCommerce, but I believe that it will grow very fast. People would be soon buying almost everything directly from the little device in their hands.
8. If you are given the option to be some superhero (or be given a magical power), who/what would it be and why?
Without any doubt, Superman. He is the ultimate superhero for me (: I have a small figure of him in my studio that reminds me that there are no limits for what a man can do (:
And the power I want is of course flying like him, but without that hair gel.
9. What other designers do you look up to? If you could peek inside the studio/toolbox of any one other designer, whose would it be and why?
I love designers who have something to say, who involve smart humor in their works, and who enjoy doing their work.
Every person (not only designers) who I feel is enjoying what he does is an inspiration for me, so you probably realize I have many favorite designers, and I can't name them all, but from the top of my head, I really like Jaime Hayon, Sato Hisao, and the works of photographer – Chema Madoz.
10. What are the products that you are working on right now? What future product do you have in the pipeline?
I'm always working on new and exciting products and I keep on updating about them on my studio's Facebook Page.
So you will just have to stay tuned and see the surprises (:
11. What advice would you like to give to budding and aspiring designers and sellers?
As a tennis fan, all that I can advise the aspiring designers is that even the greatest tennis players sometimes hit a ball to the net.
You can't succeed without some failures, so don't worry about them, and just keep on moving. But the most important thing is, find what you are best in, work hard and have fun (:
Thanks Avihai for taking out the time and doing this interview with us. We'd like to wish you the very best for the future.
