Guest Posting Series: Part I

Posted: 4/16/2013
We have in the past done quite useful posts regarding guest posting - tips and myths etc. Moreover our dedicated group of contributing authors always add a new dimension to our blog.

However, today we start rolling out a series completely dedicated to our views about guest posting and authorship. Each day we shall be taking up one unique aspect of it. Today we'll stick to building some basics.

Our blog is known for its quality content publishing. But how do we manage to stay true to our blogging ideals with a melee of guest authors, each with their own perceptions? Does guest posting overshadow our own blogging team? Does "accepted" content boost site traction always? What is so unique about guest posting that the domestic blog team cannot accomplish?

These are some recurrent dilemmas any business blog looking to spread its wings beyond the traditional methods, is bugged with. And mind you blogging is a subtle art- playing right with words becomes so much important as company reputation is at stake. Added to this a guest author is a new ingredient in the soup.

Blogging in itself is a newbie art, roughly a decade old. Guest posting as such became a rage when writers, mostly freelancers, did not have mainstream avenues to earn a livelihood. Besides there are those people simply born with a good writing flair but not bold enough to make a living out of it professionally. With the boom of eCommerce marketing, almost every business has transcended to the online arena with a personal website/blog as tools for advertising.

So basically it was a new lease of life for those wallowing on the sidelines with a pen in their hands and thoughts in the heads, metaphorically of course. The classic examples of popular bloggers in the niche, following the eCommerce revolution,  are probably Guy Kawasaki and Danny Iny of the Firepole Marketing.

Guy needs no introduction. On the other hand, dubbed as the "Freddie Krueger" of blogging, after his post- 38 Critical Books Every Blogger Needs To Read became viral and even Guy appreciated him on it, Danny began the trend of official guest posting trends as we know now.

The blogosphere  is a vast space and "stalking" a audience to stay committed to what you write daily is not an easy task. You just cannot force people to listen to you. But you can surely capture their imagination by playing the perfect Wordsmith (content creator/blogger). And rightly so,  Danny opines in his own post that "you don’t need to really be everywhere in order to appear 'everywhere' ". Building a micro-network is all that you need to do.

Starting out with Copyblogger and slowly moving to multiple blogs, is what did the trick for Danny. It's how he handled the work pressure diligently and delivered the scores of articles on multiple platforms in a single day, that stands out.  This is the mantra for attaining visibility as a guest author- mounting an attack from various platforms, that induces readers to take note of your content.

It sure seems like a difficult task to regularly contribute like Danny did, virally. But if he can do it, so can everyone else. His journey to success was not instantaneous but due to sheer concerted effort to produce quality content at an unmatched speed.

A great promotional tool, guest posting is not all about handing hot cakes without returns. It not only establishes your professional credentials as a content strategist but also allows your personal thought process to evolve. How? Online content creators do not produce absolute original content. It is a product of being well read about trends from across various sources or through personal experiences. The hard part is not the writing but to find an inspiration to share your knowledge for the larger good.

At the end of the day, money and fame matters but so does personal growth....of people and the businesses they believe in!
