Small business owners are always looking for ways to get publicity, and one of the easiest ways to do that is through social media. Any promotions or deals that a small business offers via social media can easily go viral. With social media, even a one-person business has the potential to reach some of the same people as big businesses do. And because social media websites don't cost any money to join, a small business owner doesn't need a large advertising budget to bring attention to anything that he or she is doing. Promotions can be easily organized and launched on social media websites.

Small Business and Social Media Marketing

When it comes to using social media for marketing, the key to success is having a large number of followers. It's important that small businesses take baby steps when first entering into the world of social media marketing. Before starting a social media marketing campaign, it is important that a person has the time to do it effectively. Simply posting once a week isn't going to cut it in the world of social media. In order to build a large following, business owners should make posts daily.

Engaging existing and potential customers is also important. Asking for feedback is a good way to get people talking. Although there are times when people won't respond, most of the time they will. It's also important not to be pushy when advertising a product or service through social media marketing. Pushy tactics can scare potential customers away.

Benefits of Social Media for Small Business

A recent study found that 48 percent of small business owners were able to improve their sales by engaging in social media marketing. The same study found that 58 percent of small business owners reduced advertising costs, thanks to social marketing. The study also revealed that small business owners had double the chances of finding qualified leads when compared to larger businesses that also use social media.

The ability of a small business to reach the 64 percent of United States adults who use social media is another benefit. Additionally, 79 percent of social media users will see what other people have to say about products and services a business is offering. By having a good social media reputation, a business can increase sales. According to 59 percent of social media users, a business that uses social media seems more accessible. Simply being active in social media seems to be a benefit in itself.

Five Tips for Using Social Media for Your Small Business

Use short videos. Adding a short video to a social media page may help increase a business’s prominence in search engine results.

  • Keep tabs. It's important for a person to know how he or she is doing with social media. A business owner should know what is getting responses and what isn't.
  • Exclusive offers. Using social media to offer exclusive specials may attract more followers.
  • Interact. Interacting with customers and potential customers is important. If a customer voices a concern on a business’s social media page, the concern should be addressed.
  • Link things together. People need to make sure that all their marketing efforts are linked. A business can use one social media site to promote another. For example, a business owner can generate more traffic by posting a link on Facebook to a video posted on YouTube.

Social media allows a small business to appear much larger than it actually is. An active social media presence across multiple platforms is a must in order to remain competitive. Running promotions and offering coupons through social media websites will help a small business rapidly increase the number of followers and brand recognition. Neglecting social media is something that a small business simply can't afford to do. After all, social media marketing doesn't cost a small business anything but time.

Thanks Lindsey for an informative post. I've been a small business owner, high school and collegiate teacher .... for a long time and as an older guy not too far from retirement, I enjoyed the youthful enthusiasm I detected in what you wrote. I am now a 1-person operation again and the studies/research you site is helpful. Oh, and I may have to follow your "pranks" section on your website so I can be ready for what my students may have planned. If they allow me to post a fb page, you can see one terrific example as my cover photo at facebook.com/virtualmusicoffice.
