1. Hi Nicole, please tell us something about yourself and embarkly. What was the inspiration to come up with a pet boarding search engine? Is there a personal story that you would like to share with our readers?
Finding and booking quality pet care was always a struggle for me personally. As a picky pet parent, I wanted to know exactly what I was buying for my dogs and cats. When boarding my dog, I wanted to know he was in professional hands and wasn't going to come home sick or having picked up bad habits. Some places are staffed by folks who love dogs, but don't understand them. Others suffer from overcrowding.
Finding information online was a pain. It was hard to even find a directory of businesses that were still operating, much less compare them. Then I had to scour each individual website to get information like prices, location, and pictures. I usually had to go to yet another website to find reviews, but many times I would find boarding reviews when I needed daycare, or grooming reviews when I need boarding.
Finally, I had to call each place individually to see if they had availability. It was a pain and I'm busy like everyone else. So I set out to gather all of this information in one place--that's Embarkly.com. We find and partner with the best and most trusted business and do all the leg work for our community of pet parents so they can compare and book with ease and peace of mind!
2. What were some of the difficulties that you faced in getting Embarkly up and running from the conceptual stage?
I'm not a technical person. It took a while to find the right technical partner and I'm so glad I waited for the right one. Orion is the best cofounder. We really work well together.
3. Being a start-up, how are you promoting yourself? What is your take on promotion using the social media channels versus word-of-mouth recommendations?
I spend all of my time talking to folks, whether over the phone or in person tell them about what we're trying to do here at Embarkly. While nothing beats offline relationships, social media has been very helpful as well. I've met a lot of pet parents and partner vendors through Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. But at somepoint, it's always better to take the relationship offline.
4. Is Embarkly a purely non profit service? If not, what is your revenue generation model, especially since you do not handle any monetary aspect of the deal?
Our partner vendors pay us a referral fee for the clients we send to them.
5. How did you go about building up your database of pet boarding/daycare centers, the amenities they offer and their restrictions/requirements?
Unfortunately, there's no shortcut to quality content. We built up the business profiles by hand with the help of our partners.
6. Could you please share with us the number of boarding/daycare centres you reach out to,presently? How many people have used your service to make reservations for their pets?
Although we're growing quickly, we're not presently sharing numbers with the public.

7. What sort of activities do you like to pursue in your free time? Which of these do you find to be de-stressing?
I love hiking with my dog and practicing obedience. I also enjoy connecting with other entrepreneurs in tech.
8. What other entrepreneurs do you look up to? If you could spend sometime with one of them, then who would it be and why?
If I could spend time with any entrepreneur alive or dead it would have to be Steve Jobs. But I'd also love to meet Reid Hoffman because he's such a visionary. I also love Grasshopper.com because they understand customer service and relationship building.
9. What are the future plans for Embarkly? Do you plan on adding new functionality to the service? What about reaching/expanding outside of the US?
We have lots of new features in the works that will make finding and booking the best pet care faster, easier, and more fun. The latest feature we are testing provides dynamic pricing and discounts for pet families by type, number, and weight of pets as well as the length of stay. Pet parents now get accurate and relevant pricing for their family of pets.

10. What advice would you like to give to budding start-ups to getting off to a smooth start?
I would tell budding entrepreneurs to be persistent. The squeaky wheel always gets the grease. Be willing to do whatever it takes. It's your vision. If you don't push it, nobody else will.
