Every blogger would want to see the traffic to their blog increase all the time. However, the fact is that there will be months, weeks or days when traffic declines or stagnates. This can be very discouraging for bloggers who wants their blog to grow.

The following are some of the causes for a decline in blog traffic, and some measures you can take to mitigate the situation.

1. Topical interest

There are times when current events generate lots of traffic. For instance, if your blog is optimized with Olympic games-related keywords, it is likely receive lots of traffic when the games are due. However, when the games are over, there will most likely be a reduction of traffic. The best way of dealing with seasonal topics of interest is to grab as much traffic as possible during the peak season. This way, when traffic declines, you will still have new readers/subscribers to your blog. In addition, you need to stay alert about upcoming activities in your niche. This will enable you to create relevant content long in advance.

2. Posting frequency

Blogs which don’t have posts published consistently usually experience a decline in traffic. If there isn’t much to be read, web users are not likely visit. To retain the attention of readers, make sure you post something at least once every day.

3. Changes in search engine rankings

Search engines can alter their algorithms without any warning. This is why at times sites experience an unexplainable drop in ranking. If this happens to you, find out if you are violating any of Google’s terms through any black hat practices. Once this is cleared, you can then use Google’s webmaster tools to request for re-inclusion.

4. Promotional activities

At times, the fluctuation of traffic is influenced by the promotion and marketing of your blog (or the lack of it). The blog will not succeed just because it has great content; you need to find ways of promoting it. This could involve guest posting on other blogs, participating in forums and communities, running competitions on your blog, giving away freebies, leaving comments in other blogs and doing some offline promotion.

5. Quality of posts

Are you producing quality content which is useful and engaging? This will have a major impact on the kind of traffic your blog receives. One of the best ways of ascertaining the quality of your content is by getting feedback and critique from outsiders. If your readers don’t feel like they are getting any value from your blog, they will stop visiting. Make sure your blog offers value to your readers, entertains them, solves their problems and gives them a sense of belonging.

There are many other strategies that can be used to increase the volume of your blog traffic. The most important thing is not to panic when you experience stagnation or decline in your blog traffic. Take time to figure out what the problem could be and take the necessary action. If you give up too soon, you might never realize the potential of your blog.
