Google Related is a new extension that helps you in finding related content instantly. I know what you're thinking...there are already heaps of similar services available, so why bother with this one?

My thoughts exactly! But since it has internet giant Google behind it, I just had to check it out once. But I realized that I was being prejudiced...because it is in fact far better than many content recommendation services out there.

"Whether you're reading a news article, shopping for a new pair of shoes or visiting your favorite musician's website, Google Related works in the background to find you the most interesting and relevant content on the topics you're currently viewing. For example, if you visit a restaurant's website, Related can show you a map, reviews from Google Places, mentions from across the web and other similar eateries that you might want to try." shares Google's Product Manager, Ran Ben-Yair.

It displays a bar at the bottom of your browser, which will remain hidden until you hover over it with your mouse. Like Ben-Yair mentioned, it displays related content like maps, reviews, or eateries in the area.

Suppose you are reading about Pink Floyd, this bar at the bottom will display their YouTube videos and you can view this video without leaving the page. Just hover the cursor over the video and it will display the YouTube video in a window within the same page. This bar will also display related articles all over the web, images and other related content.

"In order to offer you relevant suggestions, Related sends the URL and other available information about the pages you visit back to Google." adds Ben-Yair. You can also +1 pages within this bar if you like. You also have the option to disable the extension for specific websites, you can customize this from the 'Options' button at the bottom right of the toolbar.

This extension is currently compatible with Google Chrome and Windows Internet Explorer only, there is no news about Safari, Firefox or Opera yet. Also for some reason it works on websites only, not on blogs.
