Natalie, lets start with a brief introduction of yours.
Houston based artist working in "Lip prints", thumbprints, acrylic, oil, ceramics, sewing, crochet & knitting.
What influences the artist within you?
I find inspiration everywhere. From other artists work, a good documentary, a book, music, or a conversation with my husband. We will sometimes spend hours searching the internet for new artists and music.
Thumb art:
Have you always wanted to become an artist? When did you realize that you're meant to be a great artist?
Art has always been a part of my life, since as early as I can remember. It's just something that has been and always will be a part of my life. Whether it's classical oil painting or glueing popsicle sticks together....I must always create. The moment I think of myself as a great artist, it's all over...because then I've lost the desire to learn and grow with my art.
Oil and Acrylic:
I wouldn't work in so many different mediums if I didn't love them all, but I could at any one moment drop everything I'm doing and sit at a pottery wheel for hours....sometimes days.
Ceramics:
You own so many wonderful creations. We would love to know your favorite one.
That's a tough one...each piece different, they all have their own life. At the moment, I am very proud of "Influence", the Hendrix portrait. I learned so much on that piece, about how much I can push myself as an artist. We filmed it in time-lapse for the video and the majority of it had to be created in one sitting....and I did it. Although, I tasted blood near the end.
Talking about the portraits you've made with the lipstick marks. How did such a creative idea strike to you?
When I was in high school I learned about the technique of making portraits with thumbprints. In 2001 I was putting on makeup to go out one night and see a band. I blotted my lips on a bit of tissue and got the idea of using lips in the same way as the thumbprints, in the spirit of pointillism.
Share your fondest memory through this artistic journey.
That "ah-ha!" moment when I saw my lip print and realized I could paint with it.
Share the best compliment you've ever received for your work.
They are all so amazing...but there was one not too long ago where someone expressed that their life had been dark and depressing for some time now, and my artwork made him smile. Also, I love the emails from folks who say they never had much interest in art before seeing my work.
Fashion:
Many other artists would draw inspiration from you. What message do you have for them?
You are in complete control over what kind of exposure your art gets. Take advantage of the internet. Send your portfolio to everyone you can possible think of and never stop working. You can't sit around and wait for someone to 'discover' you, cause it ain't gonna happen. You are in complete control.
Never stop learning and look for inspiration in everything. You never know where that next new and exciting idea might come from. And always create...you learn and grow as an artist with every new piece.
The interview sums up with a great advice. Natalie, you're doing a wonderful job! Thank you for sparing time to talk to us. Wish you all the success!
