Don't you just hate waking up to that irritating alarm tone every morning? Well, who loves that! I always wish if my alarm clock could wake me up to something soothing and pleasant. And just like me if you are also searching for an alarm clock that plays your favorite music, then you ought to checkout singNshock.

singNshock is an alarm clock that features an integrated music player with a MultiMediaCard slot where you can store unlimited music to wake up to. Waking up could never be that wonderful!

Another interesting thing about singNshock is that the clock also has an optional electric shock feature.

There is an aluminium coated off button on top of the clock, just in case you want a few more minutes to sleep and decide to stop the playing music and push the button, a micro-volts of electric current would pass through your body. Electrifying, right?

Well, the electric shock feature is no prank. According to Sankalp Sinha, the brain behind this on-of-a-kind product, "Apparently the shock triggers neurological functions of the human body and thus user is conscious very soon."

Sankalp is a 20 year old, India-based self-taught designer. He is currently a final year student, studying Automobile Engineering at Sharda University, Noida. It has just been a year since he started designing innovative products like singNshock.

The idea of singNshock came up to him after he got frustrated waking up late every day for his class. The clock is currently just a concept and all the images are computer-generated renderings.

To know more about Sankalp and singNshock, read on our exclusive interview with him.

Happy reading!

1. Hi Sankalp, let us start with an introduction to yourself for our readers.

Hello everyone! I am a 20 year old student, studying Automobile Engineering (final year) at Sharda University. I come from a creative background, where my father is a writer and mother is a painter. I have a twin brother who is into writing and photography and a elder sister who loves doing sketches and paintings (apart from her studies). From January 2012, I got interested in product design and since then, I am thriving to design products (mostly concepts) which ought be more functional, aesthetically good and inexpensive. My favorite color is orange and Yes! I am a self-taught designer. :)

2. What is singNshock and what is the concept behind this product?

singNshock is a capacitive touch screen alarm clock that features an integrated music player with mmc slot. It allows you to store unlimited music so that you can wake up to the melodies of your favorite song. The main feature of the clock is an optional electric shock feature, which gives a micro-volts of electric current, when the user pushes the aluminum coated off button on the top of the clock.

The shock triggers neurological functions of the human body and thus user is conscious very soon.

3. What prompted you to combine music and electric shock together and that too in an alarm clock?

Most products now-a-days have lost its connection with humans. They just sit idle at the floor, at a corner or on the table. So, my aim was to design a product which was more engaging. I still follow the same principle for each and every product I design.

Alarm clocks are very boring and they rarely do their job. What I observed is that people responded well to their favorite music or songs. So I thought to replace its traditional and annoying "pi-pi pi-pi" tone with more widely accepted tone i.e. music or songs. But a melodious song doesn't wake you up all the time. What people sometimes need is a kick. So the shock idea came from there, thus making it a deadly combination.

4. Please tell us about the technical features of the singNshock. What design challenges did you have to surmount to get the product to fruition?

The singNshock is still a concept. Being said that, here are the technical features that go with the clock
  • Touch screen display
  • 1 mmc slot (which will support upto 32gb of storage)
  • LED illuminated side glasses for dim lighting in the night
  • Micro-usb for charging
Once I had the basic idea of what I needed to include in the clock as features, I started to sketch possible designs for the clock. My aim was to bring the clock out of the box-zone. I wanted it to look futuristic and trendy. Once I was done with the sketching, 3-D designing was the hardest part as I wasn't specialized in the field at that time. I learned everything from the internet and it took me 2 months to complete the 3-D model and to render the images. The design community is very helpful and I am very thankful to many designers around the globe for their guidance.

5. How do you plan to promote singNshock? What do you think is the ideal mix of social, online and offline promotion? What about word-of-mouth promotion?

I never believed in paid advertisements for my works. I believe that if your content is good, people will get to know about it eventually and spread the word by their own. You don't need to be Microsoft or Apple to get your product or services into the limelight. One just need to deliver his/her best in the regard.

I am currently looking for manufacturers and investors to get the clock into production. Once the deal is done, I will be promoting the clock via online media as there is a dramatic change that has come to shopping and daily activities. Almost everything is done over the internet now-a-days.

6. The concept of singNshock has received appreciation by the people. How does it feel? What is the biggest compliment that you have received for designing singNshock?

It feels great to be recognized. It's the small reward that you get from all of your hard work. But the biggest reward or compliment is the one when your product literally changes or has the capability to change someone's life. That's the biggest compliment that anyone can give. And fortunately I got few of them for the product. :) But it is the fame that brings you down. So I always try to stay be humble and grounded.

7. Being a student, how do you manage to take out time for designing such wonderful products?

To tell the truth, I do designing most of the time. I always carry a dairy with me to my class and sketch whenever the class gets boring. My CGPAs are not good and I am struggling with my studies (which I am not proud of). I have learned a lesson which few consider too early to be serious with and that is "DO WHAT EXCITES YOU" That doesn't mean that you should engage in unethical activities. People are afraid of changing the track of their life most of the time because it contains risks, failures, and many other setbacks. But remember, the night is always dark just before the dawn. :)

8. What other designers do you look up to? If you could peek inside the toolbox of any one other contemporary designer, whose would it be and why?

Apart from product design, I am also interested in transportation design, interior design and graphic design. So I look up to a wide range of designers from every field. Every time I come across a designer's website, I bookmark their website. I exchange emails with them. I try to get familiar with their world of design. Currently I am following Karim Rashid, Yves Behar and Johnathan Ive of Apple. If given the chance, I would love to see how Johnathan Ive works because since his joining, Apple's products has been widely accepted. His work ethics and design principles are truly amazing.

9. Personally, what activities do you enjoy in your free time? Are you more of an indoor or outdoor guy?

I am a combo of both, indoor and outdoor guy. I usually play football, try to run a blog on a monthly basis, play guitar, read interesting books, meet interesting people. I don't follow the concept of free time. Because if you start believing in free time then you will start doing useless things like sitting on facebook 24/7, watching television, etc. which are not bad at first, but slowly they become a daily habit and corrupts you from the inside. I think, one will have all the time in the world to do everything but not enough life span. So keeping that in mind I try to do things which excites me and are important to me.

10. What are your future plans, both in terms of singNshock and for yourself?

For singNshock, I am looking for manufactures and investors to get this into the market. I have been approached by few but they are not satisfying. So I am still looking.

For me, I am planning to do Masters in product design. I am targeting Art Center-California, RISD-London, and IED-Milan.

11. What advice would you like to give to aspiring and budding entrepreneurs/designers?

Advice? Well I have few to give :)
  1. Do what excites you.
  2. You will be stopped for changing the path from the people you least expect from, but overcome these hurdles in time and keep going.
  3. Never stop learning. Learning is a life-time process.
  4. Keep your mind open for feedback.
  5. Be humble and respect others point of view.
  6. Help others without expecting anything in return.
  7. Let your ego go. Appreciate others work.
  8. Work for a better world, not for a better bank balance. (Most important)
Sankalp, thanks for such an extensive interview. It was a great experience learning about you and singNshock. Wish you good luck!
