Blogger burnout sucks. Feeling uninspired, overworked or undervalued can all cause blogger burnout – typified by feelings of frustration, resentment towards blogging or a lack of ideas – but so can trying to do too much and not living a life away from the computer screen.

This post takes a tongue in cheek look at ten of the tell-tale signs of blogger burnout and how you can beat them.

1. You think it's a good idea to tattoo the name of your blog on your body

This is almost certainly not a good idea. Either your ego has gone into overdrive or you're so deep in WordPress that you can't see the widget for the themes. Back away from the tattoo parlor now and go get an ice cream.

2. You've posted about cats five times this month, and you don't even own one

Lack of inspiration can be a real bummer, so can repetitive content. Maybe you're trying to replicate the success of that cat blogger you idolize, but churning out carbon copies of your favorite posts isn't going to excite your readership or help your lack of inspiration.

3. You've started sleeping at your desk because it's closer to the computer

This is just sad, and a little obsessive. Plus it certainly won't help your blogging enthusiasm if you wake up with a keyboard imprint on your face every morning. A good night's sleep is like medicine for the mind and body, so go back to your bedroom and leave the laptop at the door.

4. Last night you cried over not being able to resize an image properly

Come on now, your blog should be a happy, positive thing, not one that upsets you and makes the small things difficult. Take a break, ask a friend or fellow blogger for help and once you're done, leave your blog alone for a few days so that you come back to it with a fresh – not frazzled – mind.

5. You've contemplated going 'off grid' and shutting down your blog

Ask yourself why. Take time to think about it and don't just act on a whim. Take a couple of weeks off before making any finite decisions that you might regret later.

6. You can't remember the last time you saw your friends IRL

If you're always on the computer, how will you be able to actually live your life, see your friends and have experiences to write about? Embrace Real Life and get to the pub, quicksmart!

7. You use the term IRL. Way too much

Well, you do. Stop it.

8. It takes you half an hour to log in to all your social media accounts

We live in a techie, social world and it's understandable that as a blogger you use a lot of social media platforms to connect with readers and create additional content for your website, but do you really need 17 different accounts to do it? Probably not. Look at your readership and focus on three to five platforms that you enjoy using and get the majority of your traffic from.

9. You'd rather post about a lame coffee you drank this morning than go a day without new content

The age old adage of quality over quantity applies here. Why waste what little blogging energy you have posting about a meaningless, irrelevant or uninteresting situation when you could take a day off, close the laptop and make experiences that could actually impact positively on your blog.

10. You've check your stats five times today, and it's not even 11am

Back away from Google Analytics, step away from Shared Count and take a deep breath. Nitpicking your way through your stats is unlikely to offer that spark of inspiration you're looking for, nor will it ease your blogging anxiety. Resolve to check your stats once a week and stick to it.

Are there any more blogging burnout signs you can think of?
