Sharon Schneider, a mother of  three, faced the same problem that every mother across the world faces...shitloads of clothes in the closet that no longer fit the baby. But unlike many mothers across the world, she did not pile them away in the basement, instead she founded a company called Good Karma, to provide a philanthropic and practical solution.

Good Karma - Clothing for Kids is a subscription service through which parents can receive clothes for their babies as per their preference. And once the baby out-grows those clothes, parents can return them and ask for a new bundle. This way one can save a lot of time, money and space; parents can enjoy their baby grow without bothering about hitting the market for new clothes every other month.

Good Karma's website reminds us that a baby grows 7 clothing sizes between their birth and age 2. "That’s a lot of clothes – why buy what you’ll only use for a few weeks or months?" shares the website.

What inspired Schneider to take the plunge and launch Good Karma?

Well, like in most families, where clothes are often passed down to the next baby, Schneider too found herself packing her daughter's clothes for her sister's younger daughter. And that's when it clicked her, "Wouldn't it be great if there were a central repository where my friends and I could store our gorgeous baby clothes when we don’t need them? Someone who could keep them clean and organized, and send me just the best of the bunch, in the sizes I need, just when I need them? We’d all save money, we’d buy less and waste less, and our kids would always look great."

So, she decided to take matters in her own hands start this much-needed subscription service.

Here's how it works:

  • In order to subscribe parents have to provide some basic information like child's age, size, preferred brands, or any other requests that they may have.
  • There are 4 kinds of bundles that you can subscribe for: Bedtime bundles - $19.99/month, Basic bundle - $27.99/month, Better bundle - $44.99/month and Boutique bundle - $69.99/month.
  • Within a few days of subscription you will receive a bundle containing 7 sets of clothing, pre-washed with baby-friendly detergent and ready to wear.
  • Once you realize that your baby has out grown those clothes, you can then return them through a pre-paid shipping bag and within few days you will have the next size at your doorstep.
  • Also, if you have some spare (and usable) clothes lying around in the house, you can always send them over to Good Karma, they will credit your account for the clothes they can use and donate the rest.
  • They also believe in 'upcycling' clothes, so if they receive clothes that can no longer be used in circulation, they simply turn them into baby bibs, doll clothes, quilts or other gift items.
It seems to me that Schneider is in fact living up to the expectations, she has manged to convince those who were doubtful about her idea, inspired those who are apprehensive about turning their 'aha' moment into a project (perhaps company), provided a practical solution for all the babies and parents out there and most importantly she is very philanthropically heading towards her goal.

"I love organic, well-made clothes (buying well-made clothes, furniture and other goods is one way to be “green”), but as a mom who tries to avoid conspicuous consumption and who wants to raise my kids to be socially responsible, I have often lamented the cost and waste of baby clothes." shares Schneider. She sure is living up to the name of her company. :)

Although I am not a parent, but I am sure many moms and dads out there will find this service to be a relief. Do share your views in the comment section below.
