There are N number of options when you start choosing a case/cover for your beloved Mac products. But something like BOOK for your iPad is pretty stylish, looks classy, as well as protects your iPad with its unique features. It is handcrafted and made up of natural materials. If you'd give it a look when it's closed, it appears like any other book. Once you open it, you will realize it is a pageless book with a hard cover outside and double tangible protection inside. It is handy, trendy and a green product and that's all enough to be our 'Product Of The Week'.
We have Scott Nedrelow, the creative designer behind this clever product. Scroll down for his interview with us and a few more images:
Scott, please introduce yourself to E-junkies.
I'm a visual artist and maker of iPad and MacBook accessories based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Tell us about your wonderful product 'BOOK'.
The BOOK was the first book bound case that used traditional book binding techniques for the iPad. We started thinking about it based on the rumors surrounding the release of the iPad and started making the case on February 5th, 2010. With all the rumors and news about the direction of digital publishing and the entry by Apple into the tablet market, our goal was to make something that looked from the outside as much like a book as possible.
How did you come up with this creative idea? Do you have any story to share?
We've been thinking about the book at my studio. The BOOK case is one project that has resulted from the work we've been doing. We also started Location Books (with Ruben Nusz and Alyson Coward), which helps contemporary artists make and show work in book form. We're interested in treating the space of a book like an exhibition space. The books are beautiful-- they are ink-jet printed in my studio and bound locally. A couple of the books were acquired by the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. I'm also working on an app project that's coming for the iPad called Bearded Press. It allows people to see history and read rare or important historical editions of books in their original context on the iPad. We're making our own scans that focus on the object of the book as much as the text.
Of what materials it is made up of?
It's made from traditional book binding material-- book board, a 50/50 cotton/linen book cloth made in Germany, and also 100% natural wool felt made in Germany. The white book edge is finished wood made by a friend near Saint Cloud, Minnesota in his shop. The book cloth is mounted to the board by Campbell Logan Bindery in Minneapolis. Everything then comes back to my studio where they are assembled and shipped.
Is there any variety in the types of BOOK?
I do custom printing on the book cloth so customers can include their own logos and text-- in black and also color. There's also models with BOOK logos, and a "This is not a book" model.
Are you planning to come up with the same concept for other gadgets too?
Currently there aren't any plans to make BOOKs for other gadgets too-- because we were focused as much on the concept of the product as the actual thing, we feel like it works to be out there just for the iPad. The product that came out of making the BOOK-- the SLEEVE is something I'm interested in making for other gadgets. It's a simple wool felt sleeve that is all natural and has a great feel.
What kind of reception has 'BOOK' had so far?
It's had a great reception and has appeared in blogs and in print all around the world.
Share the best compliment you've ever received for your work.
For the BOOK case, someone wrote saying they thought it "just worked" as well as their iPad.
Would you like to share anything about your future projects?
There might be a follow up to the BOOK that I've been working on this year for the iPad 2 that looks less like a book, but has more functionality of a case.
Apart from designing, what are the things that interests you?
I'm also a visual artist, so the other activity in my studio has to do with my work. I recently showed a six channel video installation at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts called "Movie".
What message do you have for your readers?
Consider hand made accessories produced by small businesses!

I really like those cases. I'm realy interested in notebook style cases for my iPad. My favorite choice so far are the Portenzo cases! I've read fantastic product reviews, but I wanted to get feedback from some people that own one. Any suggestions? www.portenzo.com
