There are two kinds of people in this world: those who spend time and those who use time.
Utilizing time is not an easy task though, one has to have strong will power and learn not to easily get distracted from things which lead us to merely spending time rather than churning maximum productivity out of it.
We've found 3 time-saving tools that will help you in buying more time for yourself rather than spending it. Check 'em out and choose the ones that you deem to be fit for yourself or your business.
Google Desktop
Google desktop is a search engine for your hard disk that lets you search your computer pretty much like you search the internet. Not only does it let you find documents, photos, files etc from your computer within seconds but also updates your emails, RSS feeds, photos and even weather report. Once you install this application you will see a sidebar on your desktop that will let you store notes, view latest news and chat, apart from the features mentioned earlier; it also comes with auto-hide feature.
My personal favorite feature for Google Desktop is its 'Quick Search Box' which is perhaps the fastest way to search the web and your computer, all you need to do is press 'Ctrl' button twice and a search bar pops up where you can not only find files but launch applications (Eg: Word, Powerpoint etc.) without having to hit the 'Start' button. Texter Text Substitution
Adam Pash from Life Hacker reviewed this very useful software that saves you a lot of time by replacing words or phrases that you use quite often with 'hotstrings'. Hotstrings are basically abbreviations that you choose for commonly used words or phrases and when you type these abbreviations, Texter automatically converts these hotstrings into original words, thereby saving you numerous keystrokes. Texter works with any application but is compatible with Windows only. You can use this free service to create abbreviations for signatures, salutations, lengthy words, standard responses or addresses and save yourself a lot of time. Here's a video by Adam demonstrating how to use Texter. (Link)
Keep Me Out
Like me if you too are in the habit of checking your Facebook account or Twitter account way too often, then is the perfect service for you. If you find yourself spending way too much time on social networking sites when you could have been working on something more productive then this alert system will make sure that you are alerted when you go over-the-board. Keep Me Out is a free web application that keeps track of the amount of time you spend on a particular website and sends you alerts when you end up exceeding the time limit.
All you need to do is enter the URL of the site that you think you are addicted with, and set up a time limit as per your requirement, for example: 'Warn me if I go to http://facebook.com more than 30 minutes.". The application will then provide you with a bookmark which you can drag to the bookmark bar of your browser. As and when you cross the time limit, this service will send you a warning (see image below) and remind you of getting back to work and in the process bring some discipline in your online activities.
