With 2010 on its way out, Internet giants are churning out data about the top most trends this year.

Starting from Google's 'Zeitgeist' to Twitter's 'Year in Review', followed by Facebook's 'Top Status Trends 2010', we've complied a brief summary of all these trends that reveals most talked about news, people or happenings in the year 2010.

Google

The search giant analysed billions of search queries for the year 2010 calling it 'spirit of 2010'. The data reveals that Fastest Falling search trend is topped by swine flu with MySpace layouts and Micheal Jackson in the list. There is no surprise when we see Justin Bieber topping the list of 'Fastest Rising in Entertainment' with Netflix and YouTube videos in the list. iPad tops the list of 'Fastest Rising in Consumer Electronics'. Below is a very interesting video by Google summarizing the year that is about to slip into history. If you wish to dig deeper into further then checkout Google's 'Top Global Events'. (Link)

Twitter

Twitter analyzed 25 billion tweets and has published top trends of this year in eight categories: News Events, People, Movies, Television, Technology, World Cup, Sports and Hashtags. They also have an 'Overall Top Trends' section which is topped by Gulf Oil Spill, with Apple iPad on number 6 followed by Google Android and Paul the Octopus on number 10. Although Wikileaks didn't make to the list, but Julian Assange is on number 4 in 'People' segment. Very much like Google, iPad tops the technology list here as well with Google Instant on number 10. Facebook

Facebook analyzed trends in status updates by Facebook users in 236 countries revealing most talked about terms within friends and family. Since it concentrates on status updates solely, this list is quite different from Twitter and Google. The term topping the list is HMU (Hit Me Up), meaning 'lets hang out'. "The shorthand for 'hit me up' was this year's biggest surprise" shares Lars Backstrom, Facebook's data scientist. I don't know about you, but I have never heard of this term before, but its interesting to see both iPad and iPhone on number 4 with Lars explaining that "these two products combined to account for 25 million bragging".
