If you live in New York City and love its serendipitous character then Dead Drop is a project that you might be interested in. If not, then check it out anyways and you'l learn about a fascinating experiment by a guy who has injected 5 USB flash drives into walls, poles or curbs for random people to upload or drop any files they like.

Simply plug in your laptop and be a part of a project initiated by Aram Bartholl as a part of his EYEBEAM residency to create peer to peer file-sharing network in public space.

'Dead Drops' is an anonymous, offline, peer to peer file-sharing network in public space. I am injecting USB flash drives into walls, buildings and curbs accessable to anybody in public space. You are invited to go to these places to drop or find files on a dead drop. Plug your laptop to a wall, house or pole to share your files and date. Each dead drop contains a readme.txt file explaining the project. 'Dead Drops' is still in progress, to be continued here and in more cities. Full documentation, movie, map and 'How to make your own dead drop' manual coming soon.!" explains Aram.

A pretty cool concept but if you come to think of it, these USB drives can be quiet a treat for spammers and quite understandably, not many people will be comfortable with the idea of hooking their computer with random a flash drive stuck on to a wall; nevertheless it is a cool concept and we can't wait to learn about the end result and see what people like to share anonymously on a public drive.
