Blekko, a new search engine launched a public beta on Monday and aims to use human inputs for better search results.

It took 3 years, $25 million venture capital and a very gutsy attempt to launch a website in a niche that has been conquered and ruled by Google since a very long time.

Blekko's chief executive, Rich Skrenta believes that there are somethings only a human can do and filtering results without spams or repetition is one of them.

"You need to bring back human curation and combine it with algorithmic techniques to bring the quality back." says Rich.

"If you have the set of the top 50 health sites, you know what, you really can answer any health question, and you really don't want to be searching outside that set" he adds.

According to Blekko, web is full of information through billions of web pages resulting into a lot of spam websites that are designed not with the aim of providing substantial information but to win the race of showing up in the front page of Google's search results. Therefore, it is becoming increasing crucial to provide with relevant and quality data rather than falling for carefully designed marketing strategies.

"We know a much better way" claims Blekko, "a way to get orders of magnitude greater participation, while at the same time being very open about the process...let the public in".

So how does Blekko use human touch in their algorithm?

Through 'Slashtags"!

Slashtags are filters that help in elimination of spammy sites. These slashtags are added and edited by users in order to tag web pages; they can be be 'followed' by other users and use them as filters for search results. Example: Suppose you are searching for best choco pie recipe and after finding the right one, you can slashtag that site with say 'recipes' or 'pies' or 'homemade food' thereby making it easier for others to reach the same result. If you are avid twitterer then you will understand this 'slashtag' concept quiet easily since it is pretty much like hashtag.

Other than Slashtag Blekko has incorporated few more features in order to reduce unsolicited results like SEO page for individual results, links with each result, option to comment on a particular site, it also displays IP address for the result site when you hover the mouse over that link.

Blekko does not carry any advertising or paid search results...for now atleast.
