Lynette Mattke is one of those thousand mothers who are concerned about their children's addiction towards smart phones, social networking, play stations and other technological demons. What makes Lynette stand apart is that she learnt that rather than forcing children to sit and read books, why not provide them with something that they can relish on their smart phones.
"PicPocket books help children towards literacy because most kids are very curious about electronic gadgets. Why not capitalize on that fascination to grab their initial interest?" she explains.
Therefore, she decided to create an application called Picpocket Books that publishes books for children. Back in 2009 when her husband brought home an iPod touch and started downloading several apps among which there wasn't any application that provided high quality books for children. With concerns for her three kids, Lynette started pondering over the idea of creating something that they will lure her kids to get in to the habit of reading on their favorite gadget.
A former elementary school teacher and graduate in liberal arts with English Major, Lynette loves running virtual business which she launched in 2009. She started looking for a software developer which she found in a family friend, next she approached publishers who were more than willing to offer their books for virtual publishing and agreed to receive certain share from the revenue generated through sales of PicPocket application. Before she knew it, she was working with a team of graphic designers who transfered paper books into digital form and learnt to execute and navigate the application in iTunes.
Currently the application is compatible with iPhone and iPod touch only, but with time they are working on providing the application on other smartphones as well. The application comes with narrative audio that plays a major role in gaining child's interest, also if a child cannot read he/she can always listen to narrations.
"In consumer tests, we've found that children who can't read nonetheless follow the words along, which may help them with early reading skills later." claims PickPocket Books.
"In space of under a year, we've gone from PicPocket Books being just a concept to our company offering largest and most 'literary' selection of picture books available on iPhone." says Lynette.
