Banners on a website are like billboards, we don't want them there and hope that someone out there uses that space for something far more interesting and useful.
Having said that, one has to agree that there are certain advertisements that do stand apart, and in spite of our annoyance towards them, we can't stop ourselves from getting a glimpse of it; it generates curiosity and when it does, then the purpose of that supposedly "annoying" ad is solved.
Usually visitors to a website/blog hope and wish that they don't get bombarded with advertisements flashing all over the screen while looking for something far more interesting on the site. Therefore, business owners must understand this frame of mind and use banner advertising techniques that lures the visitors to click on them and learn more about your awesome product/service.
So here are couple of tips and tricks that you must consider implementing for a better advertising campaign:
Find Websites Related To Your Niche
Suppose you are selling a 'beer brewing kit', then you would (rather you should) consider advertising it on a website like "LegendsofBeer" instead of "AllPinkGirl.Blogspot"...wouldn't you? Try to find sites that are similar to your niche, and has audience that are better suited to be your target customers. Don't go advertising like a headless chicken; aim at hitting the bull's eye.
Placing Your Banners
Remember that while visiting a website, people usually turn a blind eye for any kind of advertisements floating on the screen; and if you have your banner is placed awkwardly on some hidden corner of the site, then you are clearly wasting your money. Always aim at placing your banner prominently on the site, it is your job to ensure that your ad is not missed from the visitor's eye.
Create Curiosity
As I mentioned in the beginning of the article, that a good ad should be able to create curiosity among others. You could use interesting tag-lines, quotes, deals, discounts or designs to make your advertisement more intriguing and perhaps irresistible.
Action Buttons
It is always advisable to include action buttons like "click here" , "enter here", "learn more", "sale", "discount" or "get coupons here" etc. Such buttons not only help in improving the outcome of your banner advertising but also helps in guiding the visitor about what to do next. You must remember to be honest while advertising, do not use 'free' or 'discount' buttons if you don't have any intentions of fulfilling such promises.
Animation - Keep It Simple
Animation has proven to quiet effective in banner advertising, but there are many times when people tend to get carried away and try to incorporate too much in too little. Try to keep things simple and to the point instead of having a complex advertisement, 'coz firstly people don't have the patience to view image after image in the flash and secondly it takes time to load the advertisement eventually forcing them to look elsewhere.
Keep The Size Small
Most of the websites have a standard size for banner advertisements and they tell you exactly about size and dimensions required by them. However, in cases where there are no such pre-requisites , then you must aim at having a fast loading advertisement so as to appeal to the maximum number of visitors.
Create Multiple Banners
Whenever you advertise through your banners you must make it a practice to keep a close tab on its success rate and have backup ready at all times. Try to create multiple banners with different fonts, colors, formats, size or dimensions; use them in accordance to the best results that you achieve out of them.
