As promised Twitter has finally rolled out its new feature called 'Twitter Places' which allows users to tag their exact locations with their tweets.
When Twitter had announced its plan to launch this new feature in May, many had predicted it to be Foursquare killer, ironically Foursquare and Gowalla are partners in Twitter Places feature.
Due to this collaboration, users can list their location when they tweet either from Twitter directly, the mobile site or by using Foursquare and Gowalla apps.

The application is compatible with four browsers : Safari, Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox. Over the next week Twitter Places will be available for users in 65 countries, and they will be able to specify their location through "Add your location" link in the Tweet box. Even if a particular location is not mentioned in the directory, the users have the option to add a new location as well.
"Starting today, you can tag with specific places, including all World Cup stadiums in South Africa, and create new Twitter Places" announced Othman in Twitter's Blog.
While all this sounds very promising, on the day of launch of Twitter Places, the micro blogging site had troubles locating itself; the site went down for a long time and all you could see was the Whale saying "Twitter is over capacity". Twitter admitted the problem and gave an update on their status saying:
"Update: We’re currently experiencing site availability issues resulting from the failed enhancement of a new approach to timeline caching. Our infrastructure and operations engineers are currently working to resolve this. We’ll update you soon with an ETA."
The problem has been resolved as of now, but such a glitch is definitely not a good sign on the day of launching a new feature. Very soon Twitter will be rolling out its Annotations feature, hopefully they'll manage a smooth launch.
