E-commerce company Digital River has recently filed a suit against a 19 year old New Yorker, who tried to sell data of 20,000 customers to a marketing firm - Media Breakaway.
Eric Porat contacted Media Breakaway with the intention of selling a massive data for half million dollars; Porat was an affiliate with Media Breakaway and collected commissions for sending traffic to their site.
Thankfully, when Porat approached the marketing firm with the offer they turned him down, but when he persisted and contacted them again they contacted Digital River and are willing to cooperate with the FBI in any way they can.
The company suspects that the data was originally hacked from India, but Porat is not willing to disclose as to who stole the data and how. "I fully suspect that Mr. Porat hacked the hacker" said Christopher Madel, an attorney whose handling the investigation for Digital River.
Porat has very cleverly protected himself through his Fifth Amendment of Self-incrimination and refuses to provide any information related to the procurement of the data.
