Erika Iris Simmons is a graduate in Russian and has always been interested in Maths & Science, little did she know that her right brain will outdo her left and she would eventually become an artist.
She collaborates old or used materials and creates something so alive and vibrant, that one can never resist appreciating her illustrations. She is a self-taught artist who collects all kinds of discarded items and brings life in them through her creativity and imagination.
"Ghost In The Machine" is her signature collection, she creates portraits of musical legends from discarded tapes or film reels.
During her waiting tables days in Hard Rock Cafe, Erika drew inspiration from a Jimi Hendrix themed lounge. When she went home she saw few cassette tapes and pulled out a string, it reminded her of Jimi's hair she says. With that she let her imagination do the rest and created her first portrait.
Erika encourages everyone to donate whatever they think is a waste and can be used to create another unique illustration. Apart from discarded tapes she likes to use old lace, graduation tassels or an old butterfly net. "I look forward to using different materials, netting, wires, other old electronic things." she says.
A modest artist who loves to read, create, cook and prefers staying at home, she also shies away from technology.
"I love sharing the artwork with people, and on a professional level I have to do interviews, but that’s not something I’ve ever sought out or aimed for. Its been very exciting, but I’m also hesitant to put myself out there too much. Its not about me. I’m actually really boring." she admits in an interview with the189.com.
