"Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don't know which half."

This quotation from Industrial Age retailer John Wanamaker is as true for most retailers in 2012 as it was for Wanamaker in 1838, but it doesn't have to be. In fact, if you use the performance marketing model, you can know with almost 100 percent surety what every single cent -- and even half-cent -- of your advertising dollar is doing.

Online commerce sales took a huge dive when the recession hit. What was once a bourgeoning industry quickly became a small-scale imitation of the 90s tech boom.

Like all things, though, ecommerce and all the industries that go along with it has begun to recover. Retail fulfillment, for example, has seen a bit of a growth spurt since many of the micro-businesses that have been exploding in 2011 and 2012 find themselves unable to keep up with demand.

They've also stepped in to help businesses of all sizes deal with their expanding operations while keeping shipping for customers fast and simple.

Take a cue from home design and decor when it comes to getting a new office up and running. Not only will a pleasant office space make you feel good when you come into work every day, it will help potential employees and potential clients – as well as current employees and clients – feel at ease. No one wants to do business with a company with nothing but a desk and file cabinet in its office. Emptiness or dullness subtly undermines client confidence in you as a professional because it can come off as not caring. Thinking about design when you open a new office can help you come up with clever ways to personalize the workspace.

You might not initially think that e-commerce companies need powerful servers, but they do. In order for many e-commerce sites to remain both competitive and profitable they need to implement High Availability (HA) measures, especially in a time when the market is flooded. No user likes arriving at a website that’s inoperable due to an unplanned server outage. E-commerce customers and site users want to come to a site that’s reliable and secure for a preferred digital shopping experience. High Availability is one way to ensure that e-commerce site users have constant access to products and services. Achieving optimal HA service levels involves implementing high-speed, secure server technology to ensure that standard.

Simple to execute and with a low financial barrier to entry, email marketing has such an impressive reach because everyone's got email. Most likely, customers have multiple email addresses--and they share email content socially. No matter what your line of business, there are benefits to integrating email into your marketing toolkit. If your business only needs a simple campaign, you can get things up and running without any outside help, but for an elaborate campaign, ongoing sales push or e-marketing strategy, consider hiring an email marketing agency to get the marketing started on the right track.

The origins of blogs, with “blog” being the shortened version of  weblog lie in the personal publishing universe as a place where people could publicly publish their own content in their own space, allowing others access to view it as well as an opportunity to comment on each blog entry. It may be considered a precursor to the social media boom in which we find ourselves in the current technological age.

Being something that anyone can create as a handy, casual means of dialogue between an author and an audience, it makes sense that the blog format would eventually make its way into the business universe. Blogs have become a tool for companies to help drive potential clients to your website and attract new business.

Multichannel retailing is not a new tactic. This concept existed long before mobile applications and online shopping came into our world. However, because of the recent increase in online interactions and the use of mobile technology, multichannel retailing is a fast-growing phenomenon among e-commerce merchants.

Why is Multichannel Retailing Important?

Surveys show that, though only 10 percent of businesses currently believe they are successful in the world of multichannel retailing, 46 percent plan to become successful by the end of this year. These statistics exemplify the importance of becoming a multichannel retailer if you want to remain on top in 2012. Multichannel retailers have more opportunities to show their products to customers, which in turn increases sales and profits. The more chances you have to engage your potential buyers, the more likely you are to create a loyal base of consumers that will return to your company again and again. But how do you become a successful multichannel retailer?

Social media has revolutionized communication: from education to business, social media has given millions of users the power to make their voices heard, to communicate with friends and strangers, and to share and receive information on an endless list of subjects. But it’s also been a surprisingly effective tool in helping ordinary people learn more about newly-diagnosed medical conditions, techniques for treating symptoms, and details about general topics like nutrition and fitness.

Playing for health

The popularity of social games has exploded in the past few years, and game companies and health care businesses alike are hoping to gain a foothold in a new market. According to the Wall Street Journal apps that give customers alerts, personalized information and weight-loss plans are attracting large audiences. By adding game elements and incentives to play, users can feel both a sense of involvement with their health care, as well as receive rewards for playing.

Every Nook And Cranny

In the face of the digital revolution, Barnes & Noble has some hard choices to make. While comparisons to the failed Borders chain abound, the two companies have little in common in terms of business strategies.

Borders had a history of poor decisions, removing itself from the digital market early on; Barnes & Noble took the opposite approach and has been able to turn itself from a book retailer into a successful multi-faceted business. Its expansion into the digital realm has been directed and used to support and augment the company's existing business architecture. Offering mobile phones, payroll processing or web design services wouldn't make sense for a bookstore, but developing dedicated digital reading devices, like the Nook and Nook Color, and a digital bookstore tied into physical B&N locations is a strategic move to keep up with the times while still drawing people into brick and mortar stores.

The trend of Cyber Monday (the Monday following Black Friday where shoppers primarily shop online) only recently caught on in 2005, but it has since brought exponential growth to the e-commerce industry. The popularity of the Cyber Monday holiday, as well as the popularity of online shopping alternatives on Black Friday, has caused the U.S. Census Bureau to predict an outstanding 17.6% leap in sales for the second quarter of 2011 compared with the second quarter of 2010.

It would appear that Cyber Monday is here to stay.

What was once an industry built on vanity presses and writing of questionable quality has become one of the fastest growing industries in the publishing world. Self-publishing is giving writers the opportunity to cultivate audiences, as well as to catch the attention of larger publishing companies. And with the rising popularity of e-books, self-publishing can be quick, easy and, most of all, profitable for the right writers. By cutting out the middle men of mainstream publishing houses, self-publishing authors are finding success—both critical and financial—with their work.

Self-publishing could also change the way teachers and students use textbooks. As e-readers and tablets become more commonplace in classrooms and on college campuses, the possibility for creating interactive, up-to-date textbooks is both exciting and daunting. Professors and instructors could create their own teaching materials and tailor texts for each new group of students they teach, and adapt their texts for varying abilities and learning styles. But the pros and cons of self-published texts could make it difficult to adopt on a large scale.

How self-publishing could change education…

In a month full of tech news, Amazon made a big splash at the end of September with their announcement of the new family of Kindle devices. In addition to the anticipated Kindle Fire, Amazon introduced two devices: the new Kindle, which is smaller, thinner and lighter than the original Kindle, and the Kindle Touch, an e-ink device with a touchscreen. Together with the tablet/e-reader hybrid Kindle Fire, Amazon has introduced a range of devices that could take the e-reader market by storm.

But the impact of Amazon’s new range of Kindles could go beyond just competition with other e-readers. With their new tablet, Amazon is poised to change the game—and the possibilities for business, entertainment and education.

It’s a sad fact that many blog owners aren't reading more than their RSS feeds are telling them to. Perhaps part of this situation stems from the also-sad fact that many of them hide behind the name ‘blogger’ as if it obscures the fact that they’re also writers.

Reading is imperative. Make yourself do it by whatever means possible, whether it’s signing up for a literature class through an online school or simply making a goal of reading 50 pages a night.

It doesn’t matter if it’s Sir Walter Scott or JK Rowling; it’s going to improve your writing.

There are tons of articles on the internet telling you how to waste time. In fact, there are even a few here. But what about those times you actually need to put your head down and get stuff done despite the tempting siren call of Angry Birds or Bored Panda? The solution isn’t simple, and it will require some added will power.

Now-a-days, shopping for just about everything is as easy as a mouse click. From paying bills to buying clothes, e-commerce is the new normal. As the Internet becomes the main platform for the exchange of ideas as well as goods and services, how are the students of online education using e-commerce? Are they more likely to buy and sell online than traditional students and consumers?

There’s no concrete proof that students who take classes online are more inclined to engage in e-commerce on a regular basis, but it’s possible to draw parallels between learning online and purchasing goods and services online. Computers and smartphones are making it possible to learn—and to buy—regardless of location. This, along with other similarities between learning online and e-commerce, are worth exploring.

The Future of Books, The eBook

It’s amazing where the world is going when it comes to written content. Many authors are turning to the net to publish their work instead of traditional publishers. Because many publishers aren’t interested in you unless you have a following or a previously published work, online publishing seems to be the best venue for writers who are sick of all the rejection letters.

You may be wondering about the venues for online publishing. It isn’t just blogs and online magazines. Aside from those is the magical world of eBook publishing. This may seem a bit shady, and I admit that I was a bit skeptical, but if you do a little research you may be surprised how many people are interested in reading digital media. The Kindle, for instance, is one of the many tools that users use in order to read new books and is also one of the most popular items on the market for adults. It’s incredibly useful for college students who don’t want to lug a lot of books around as well as helpful for students pursuing their online education.
