The Golden Rule
Everyone knows the Golden Rule, but how does it relate to your e-commerce endeavor?
Treat others the way you want to be treated. Put yourself in your customer’s
shoes and think about all of the things you look for in an e-commerce site. Even
better, listen to your customers. There’s no better way to figure out how they
want to be treated then asking them yourselves. Your customers offer the best
feedback and criticism so it’s important to take what they say to heart. Also,
listening to them is what builds lasting relationships (and leads to loyal
customers).
The Golden Rule goes for marketing as well, you don’t enjoy
being spammed by advertisers, so don’t treat your
customers that way either. Find them in the right places, and the key is making
it seem as if it was their idea, make them come to you instead. As frequent
online shoppers themselves, the guys at ITLY know exactly the treatment they expect
from their favorite online stores. Everyone enjoys receiving free shipping,
free returns and customer-satisfaction guarantees. By maintaining the golden
rule and giving your customers exactly what they would expect from other
ecommerce sites you’ll sustain quality conversions.
Testing is
Essential
Although you’ve spent tons of time and effort perfecting
your design and all of the ins and outs of your page, you never know how your
customers will react until you’ve done proper testing. When it comes to your
ecommerce site you can never do enough a/b testing. You can (and should) test
everything from placement of your CTA, to the length of your drop down menu, and
implementing different types of customer service tools.
Concept Feedback is a tool that allows you to
submit your website for experts to review, provide you with a detailed
analysis, and provide you with new strategies and recommendations to increase
conversions. Usability testing is important to make sure your customers can
easily make it to the end of your shopping cart without anything getting in their
way.
Know your
Logistics
This part is less fun, but a necessary
component to running your ecommerce business. Logistics consist of everything
from shipping and handling, warehouse and distribution centers are organized,
you acquire all necessary inventory, etc.
One of the biggest challenges e-commerce sites face is
delivering their product to the customer on time. As an e-commerce business
you’re responsible for all of your products getting shipped out in a timely
manner, and in addition if the customer isn’t happy with their purchase you’re
also responsible for reverse logistics. For this reason many e-commerce sites
today are outsourcing their logistics to third parties. A 3PL service such as genco
serves for all of your packaging, distribution, reverse logistics, inventory,
and any other such needs.

So what do you think, are you ready to start your own
e-commerce site? E-commerce sites are a great way to extend your business to new parts of the world you never even possibly thought you could reach. But there’s a lot of hard work involved. About 90% of ecommerce sites don’t
stay open more than 5 years. If you pay close attention to these three
things you need to know and prepare yourself beforehand you can become part of
that top 10%.
Great Tips!
