When you first start your business, getting your name out to potential new buyers
is a big deal. But how should you go
about it?
Word-of-mouth of course is likely going to be the cheapest form of
advertising for you. Someone who likes your
product, tells a couple friends, who tell a couple of friends and so
forth. Your strategy should include encouragement, instead of simple waiting for the good word to roll around.
You can promote positive feedback by:
- urging on word-of-mouth with hashtag campaigns.
- creating truly shareable content.
- investing in really great customer service. If you have happy customers, they are likely to share their positive experiences (and your brand name) on their social channels.
- sweetening the deal with a giveaway. The number of people responding to your content is likely to explode when you add a small incentive.
Now, you cannot solely rely on others to spread your message, you also need to promote your online business on other channels. Local
newspapers, television, radio, mailers and magazines used to be all the options there were.
But now you should also consider:
- creating banner ads on sites that relate to your product(s), but are not direct competitors.
- placing ads on niche podcasts, and on services like Pandora and Spotify.
- placing ads on Facebook that closely target the customers you want.
- promoting Tweets.
If you haven't got the time to research and execute advertising campaigns for your business, the next step is to hire a pro. Seek out an advertising/PR firm, check their credentials, make sure you vibe well on a personal and professional level and hand over the marketing reins. Many firms excel at getting products noticed, will seek
out the best avenues for your advertising dollars and have experience you might not. Most importantly, they will free you up to build your
business and product offerings.
