For most DIY enthusiasts using old and discarded glass bottles to create perfect masterpieces is not an easy task. Getting that perfect cut and not ruining your favorite glass bottle, something that most DIY artists dread.

In case you are looking for an easy and hassle-free way to cut glass bottles, meet C&C, a glass bottle cutter which is designed to cut a glass bottle of any diameter.

"But there are many other glass bottle cutter out there, why should I use C&C?" I know the obvious question in your mind.

C&C is not like any regular bottle cutter. Apart from its aesthetic design and being easy to use, you can use it to cut a glass bottle at any position. Every C&C is accompanied with six additional cutter blade, so no worrying about ruining the cutter's blade with use

C&C doesn't splits a glass bottle but creates a score line on the bottle at the exact positions where you want the bottle to split. It's the thermal shock which is the result of dipping the bottle in boiling and ice cold water that splits the bottle.

Here how C&C works:
  1. Place the bottle on the C&C, adjust it to the exact location where you want the bottle to split. Roll the bottle slowly in one circle, while you are doing this you'll hear the glass cutter scratching the glass. Make sure you the bottle stays in one place and the rolling is continuous.
  2. Now slowly pour boiling water on the score line, then ice cold water from the faucet. This would help the bottle split along the score line.
  3. Now that the bottle has been split, all that you have to do is rub the sharp edges of the bottle using sandpaper.
C&C is made using durable laser cut plywood which is stained and assembled together with a custom made cutter and screws.

C&C is an awesome tool for DIY and upcycling enthusiasts and can be used to create glasses, vases, lamps, ashtrays or whatever your creativity demands.

Happy reading!

1. Hi Toms, please introduce yourself to our readers.

Hi, I'm Toms Liepkalns. I am 26 years old and I have a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering. Ever since the childhood I have been passionate about how things work. I love to create something new and even more I love to share it with others. My heart is in Riga, but my home is in London.

2. What was the inspiration to develop the C&C Bottle Cutter? Was it something that sprang out of an experience in real life?

At the very beginning there was just one empty glass bottle that I didn't want to throw out. It was very beautiful. I started to think how can I make a second use of it. I did some research and found out that bottles can be cut. I started to experiment with it. There were lots of damaged bottles including the one I wanted to be kept. Heh!

3. How did the design of the holder for the C&C Bottle Cutter evolve, specifically the adjustability for bottles of various sizes?

If you have done some research about bottle cutting, you probably know that have been such tools out in the market before. The problem about them is that none of them is even close to being perfect. I wanted to make something better than all of them to make sure that exactly C&C would do the best work. I made different prototypes until I got to the point where I had a useful bottle cutting tool. I knew it should cut almost any diameter bottle, it should be very easy to use and it should look very good as well.

4. Since you allow for cutting bottles of various sizes, do you also provide tungsten carbide blades of various sizes or is there a way to mount a single blade to suit all sizes?

There are six tungsten carbide cutter blades. They are all the same size. If one is out worn, you can simply change it to new one. That's it. Cutter blades don't have to be of different sizes. You just adjust the blade position.

5. What are the accessories that you provide with the C&C Bottle Cutter? After cutting with the cutter to cut the bottle you have to pour scalding water over it followed by cold water. Is there no better way to do it?

Ohh there are other methods how to make thermal shock, but this is the easiest and fastest way. The cutter blade doesn't cut the bottle. It just scores a small line in the glass surface. When you make a thermal shock, the bottle splits right at this line. The water is supposed to get only on score line and a bit around it. That's why we have the rubber rings. There are 3 different sandpapers included in a kit for finishing up, but you can buy additional ones at almost every craft store.

6. How is the C&C Bottle Cutter different from all such bottle cutters in the market?

This was the main question I asked myself, while creating the product. Comparing with other bottle cutters that can cut only standard diameter bottles, with C&C you can cut starting from very small diameter bottle necks up until 3L jars. In addition to that, you can adjust the cutter length and keep it for the next bottle, for example, to create sets of equal glasses.

Comparing with other bottle cutters with only one cutter blade, you won't need to worry about buying new ones for a long time.

C&C does not only work perfectly, but it also looks great. Comparing with other bottle cutters, that can be used only for cutting, C&C works also as a beautiful wooden bottle stand.

7. How are you marketing the C&C Bottle Cutter in the market? What do you think is a good mix of Social Media marketing and word-of-mouth marketing for a new product in the market?

Before launching the campaign, I made homepage for C&C ,so that I could tell everyone about my project prior to the launching. I tried to get as many subscribers as possible by sending press release to other blogs and media. I think it's important that people are waiting for your product already before campaign. It makes good start when launching. Me and my team are doing all marketing by ourselves. We are using social media ( Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest) to post our publications and news. The biggest support we have from Facebook and directly from Kickstarter. For now we haven't tried word-of-mouth marketing so I can't tell how that type of marketing would impact the project. We are working hard on marketing through social media and it has been rewarded by our backers.

8. Your Kickstarter campaign was a massive success. What compliments have you received for the design of your product from your backers? What compliments do you cherish the most?

I have received compliments about our product design from backers all over the world. Compliments, I cherish the most, are from experienced product and graphic designers, but, of course, I love comments from every backer, such as: "Custom/Homemade Coke bottle glasses, here I come!"

9. When you are working on the C&C Bottle Cutter how do you like to spend your time unwinding? What do you find most relaxing?

When I want to rest my mind from project I take a walk with my dog Oddy, do some push-ups or play squash with a friend, but trust me, when I say,- there is almost no free time while campaign is on.

10. What are your future plans for the C&C Bottle Cutter?

For now, I want to finish the campaign and deliver C&C to all our backers as fast as possible. I know that it will take a lots of work till it will be done, so I haven't really thought about future plans, except some ideas about offering C&C after Kickstarter campaign ends.

11. Having developed a product from the drawing board to complete fruition what lessons have you learnt and what message would you like to pass on to budding and aspiring entrepreneurs?

The main thing I want to say is that it takes lots of hard work to be successful at crowdfunding! When I look at some other campaigns, I think that some creators don' t really understand how the crowdfunding works. The key is - how you show your idea to the world.  Backers must believe you and understand what exactly you are offering in return to their support and how the thing you offer, would make their lives better.

Also I want to give a message to everyone by saying - believe in your dreams! There have been many people who have said - you will fail, don't even start, it is not worth it, but I believed in my idea and didn't quit. That was the simple key of my success.

If you believe in yourself everything is possible.

Thanks Toms for taking out the time and doing this interview with us. We'd like to wish you and your team at C&C Bottle Cutter the very best for the future.
