Facebook did it, Twitter is also doing it and now joining these biggies of the social networking world is Pinterest. I bet I got you wondering what 'it' is.

'It' stands for advertising. Yes, Pinterest is welcoming advertisers with both hands open. This is a huge step taken by Pinterest towards monetizing its service and why not? Everyone is doing it!

With a great success story and popularity, Pinterest has began experimenting with promoting certain pins from a select group of businesses.

According to Ben Silbermann who broke this news in a blog post, the pinners won't be seeing flashy banner ads or unwanted pop-ups.

They call it 'promoted pins' a name borrowed from Facebook and Twitter that have an advertising feature by the same name

The 'promoted pins' would be 'tasteful', 'transparent' and 'relevant'. Moreover, Silbermann also mentioned that the promoted pins would be improved based on the feedback from the pinners.

Initially, Pinterest would be promoting pins in the search results and category feeds. "For example, a pin for a Darth Vader outfit from a costume shop might be promoted in a search results for 'halloween'." Furthermore, currently nobody is paying anything, as this is just an experiment and the folks at Pinterest want to see how things go.

While this news has received mixed responses from the users, we are yet to see how things go once users starts seeing these 'promoted pins'. If you ask me, I cannot wait to see these ads. Pinterest is already driving huge traffic to many websites and blogs and helping them in making sales, the 'promoted pins' would be a great add-on.
