Call it a hush-hush update but its true that Google has replaced its old search algorithm with a new one called the 'Hummingbird'.

At an event that was held yesterday and was hosted in the garage where Larry Page and Sergey Brin started the company, Amit Singhal, senior VP of search at Google told the media that the company has launched the new algorithm about a month ago. He did not disclose the changes but this new search algorithm would and to be more precise is affecting the traffic to websites.

Last when Google made any modified its algorithm was in 2010 and was known as 'Caffeine'.

Singhal also shared that the new algorithm is currently affecting the analysis of around 90% of the search queries that Google gets.

The new search algorithm allows Google to quickly parse full questions and to identify and rank answers to those questions from the indexed content. In short better search results!

Apart from Hummingbird, Google also gave out a few more updates. The 'Knowledge Graph' now has a new comparison feature and filters. That would make your Google Search experience better, giving you the exact information you are looking for. Singhal on his blog shared, "We keep expanding features of the Knowledge Graph so it can answer more questions—even those that don’t have a simple answer."

Google also announced that it would soon be updating its Google Search app for iPad and iPhone that will provide Google Now-based reminder notifications across devices and would also be launching a new design for mobile search results and ads.

In case your website's traffic has not dropped or made a huge jump in the past few weeks then you shouldn't be worring about the new algorithm but in case it has it's about time you start working on a new SEO strategy.

These Google updates and soon-to-happen launches make one thing clear that the company is evolving and keeping in pace with its users and the way they are using the internet.

PS - It's Google's 15th birthday today and the E-junkie team would like to wish the folks at Google Happy Birthday. Thanks for making our lives so easy :)
