The first line to catch my eye was "eat your vegetables along with the utensils" on Fast Company's blog. The curiosity bug caught me and led to Qiyun Deng's website to explore what all this was about.

A little about this designer first.

Qiyun Deng is a China-based product designer who has a degree from ECOL(Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne) in Switzerland. Her designs now exemplify a innate connection with traditional Chinese things, one way or the other related to nature and its sanctity.

For top brands such as furniture makers Cassina, Qiyun produced an excellent line of bamboo-based sofa. However, it is her "Graft" that stands out for us.

A biodegradable collection of tableware that is made out of bio-plastic and resembles vegetables, Graft was her diploma project. Giving a substantial validation for her theme based project, she mentions that "Texture and form in nature autonomously exist with a function that we can borrow to serve the purpose of artificial objects." What this means is that human beings have a natural affinity for imagining objects, even food utensils.

While bioplastic utensils are not exactly an unknown commodity in the markets, what with businesses adopting the "Go Green" protocol in the manufacturing sector. They are mostly made out of biodegradable materials such as corn starch, vegetable oils and fats.

The most adorable part of the design process for me is the thoughtful creation Qiyun has managed by adding a narrative to each of the utensils. Perception is a powerful driving tool and Qiyun shares this thought as well. We quote her, "Savory vegetables make sense as a fork, which you’d most likely use for a salad. And an orange for a goblet may bring out the sweeter, citrusy notes of a beverage."

Well the lady's got a good design and believable narrative to her creative experience. We hope you made the necessary connection with her ideas too. Take a look at her product designs below!
