A UK based graphic designer and illustrator, Patrick C. Klein has just taken the meaning of getting social to another level. He has just designed a board game he calls 'Facebook: The Board Game. '
In a subtle manner, the game is a lamentation on the sad ephipany that social networking sites such as Facebook are slowly depleting the human connections. No doubt people are connecting with each other but in a whole new impersonal manner in this digital age. This dissociated mingling in a virtual way is the cause of psychological disorders such as loneliness, depression and insecurity.
For today's youth, the definition of looking cool is having a long friend list on Facebook strangers they are never probably going to meet face to face, a pile of Instagram-ed photos, relationships making and breaking over the Chats and concerned parents "looking out" for their child's activity. Well that's how sad it gets!
Pat's game is a response to all this. His monopoly-styled game borrows a popular trend and attempts to use it as a medium to engage people at a personal level, as a group activity that binds people. A board game on a weekend or special holidays is a great way to connect with friends and family instead of whiling it away on the laptop/PC. That's what people actually did in the old days.
The game is sweet imitation of actual Facebook features. Each tile is assigned a function. Players arriving on tiles like "Status" have to share a news, current thoughts or even future plans. Tiles like "Video" and "Events" demands that the players watch a movie/video or plan an outing together. Penalties too are quite endearing. If one gets stuck at "Unattended PC" or "Break Up" players are forced to leave the room and even break up with their partners. Funny in a absolutely weird way!
Here's a look at the board game through some pictures. We hope many of you will play this soon.
