In an interesting post in April, we featured Nickolay Lamm's fabulous handiwork- Popular destinations under sea level.

This Pittsburg-based artist believes in speaking his mind through his illustrations. A self-styled researcher cum artist, he chose to become a entrepreneur early but his first love remains his passion for art. It is his tool for communicating his causes.

With a flair for capturing what he strongly feels about, Nickolay says "I always loved to draw and almost went to an art school instead of university. I combine art and research together to create compelling illustrations. All of my work is made possible by my sponsors, who commission what I do".

From technology to business wisdom to environmental awareness to Barbie's without makeup,  Lamm has been reproducing his thoughts on his blog since 2011.

Technology and online business management being his main areas of professional expertise, Nickolay's career graph is multifaceted. Starting his own business in 2004, he moved on to become a map analyst intern and learning Russian as well. Marking a new shift was his stint as a marketing intern, copywriter and SEO intern during 2009-10.

In view of his quality content production and understanding of the niche, he has published works with popular sites like Forbes, Mashable, Huffington Post, Yahoo!, MSN, Computer World, Business Insider.

It is our great pleasure to feature his views and ideas on our blog as the "Artist of the week". Get to know Nickolay in his own words, now:

1. Hi Nickolay, kindly introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Nickolay Lamm. I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2011 from the College of Business Administration.

2. You call yourself a researcher and artist. How do you manage to balance out these multi-faceted callings of yours? What 'identity' do you prefer more or feel more comfortable with?

I'm most comfortable being called an artist and researcher. I look for things which I feel are being overlooked. I illustrate them with the help of other artists, and publicize them.

3. We understand that you interned as a map analyst with a retail business way back in 2009. How has that skill helped you in your current works, especially the Sea level series? How has the response to this initiative been?

During the map analyst position I looked at many maps. Perhaps, subconsciously, that position made me look at maps of anything in a new way. I'm very pleased with the amount of publicity my projects get on a consistent basis.

4. You started out as an entrepreneur with Aquawiz eBay Store. Tell us something about what inspired your venture and what was the most important business lesson you gathered from there? Do you plan to start an independent new venture any time in the future?

My high-school experience as an entrepreneur taught me that if you follow the advice that everyone else is following (what type of jobs to do, what books to read), you'll only achieve mediocre success. I feel success lies in experimenting with what works and what doesn't. Eventually you'll find something that nobody else knows and be much more happy and successful as a result. I always valued my independence, which is why I failed over a dozen times with my entrepreneurial ideas.

My life goal is to create a startup which changes the world. I have a product in the works right now. Whether or not it ends up being the life changing product I envision it to be is irrelevant. It's part of my journey to leave my mark on the world.

5. I personally love your write-ups on your blog, especially your writing style. How do pick your topics to write on and what social media platforms do you follow ardently to keep yourself updated?

I follow all recent news events on many sites. All my blog posts are based on things which I feel are overlooked. Whenever I read a news story and say to myself "That's not right" or "It would be much better if they did this" I go ahead and make what I feel is better.

6. You are an avid blogger and guest contributor on websites. What do you think is the ideal mix for social media success, especially for upcoming bloggers?

I'm not much of a guest contributor. If you create something newsworthy, any news site will write about you without asking you to write a guest post. If you create something cool, people will naturally talk about your work.

7. Besides designing and illustrating, what other activities do you enjoy? What activity do you find the most relaxing?

I like to read. I enjoy running, playing hockey, taking walks. But I find taking walks to be the most relaxing.

8. With your varied interests, what is your dearest creation till date? Any special recognition or compliments for your works that you have received, please tell our readers?

I'm proud of all my projects. However, I'm most proud of my iWatch concept and sea level rise project. I got the most compliments for my iWatch concept from prominent tech bloggers.

9. If you could peek inside the studio/toolbox of any designer/artist/photographer, who would it be and why?

I can't speak for all. But for myself, all I need is my MacBook and that's it.

10. What are your future plans as an artist? One online reputation management tip that you would like to share with the start-up businesses.

I plan to create more work that brings attention to things that are being overlooked. If you're a small business or a startup looking for some publicity, try to tie in what you do to recent hot topics. The media doesn't care about you, it doesn't care about me. If you give them a story that has demand, you'll have their attention.

Thank you Nickolay for taking out the time and doing this interview with us. We wish you all the very best for your future endeavors.
