When earlier this week Facebook asked everyone to wait until Thursday for a major announcement, everyone was expecting that Facebook is going to make an official statement about the long-rumored Facebook Phone.

Well, Thursday has come and gone and all we know that there is no Facebook Phone.

Yesterday, Mark Zuckerberg at an event shushed the rumor mill and now what we know is that Facebook is adamant in taking our Facebook-mobile experience to another level with its new Facebook Home app.

"Today we're going to finally talk about that Facebook Phone, more accurately, we're gonna talk about how you can turn your phone into a Facebook Phone" shared Mark Zuckerberg.

Facebook Home is going to replace the standard Android interface with its own home screen and lock screen, making the handset Facebook-centric. Users would be able to view photos, status updates and notifications full screen. And the first handset to have Facebook Home pre-installed, is the yet to be launched HTC First on AT&T carrier; this app can also be easily downloaded on some HTC and Samsung phones.

According to the official announcement post in Facebook Newsroom, "We all want to share and connect. That's how we discover new information and build meaningful relationships. But today, phones are built around tasks and apps. To see what's happening with your friends, you pull out your phone and navigate through a series of separate apps. We asked ourselves if sharing and connecting are what matter most, what would your phone be like if it put your friends first? Our answer is Home. Home isn't a phone or operating system, and it's also more than just an app. Home is a completely new experience that lets you see the world through people, not apps."

Facebook Home would be launched first in the US on April 12th and would be only available in Android Jelly Bean and Ice Cream Sandwich handsets. There's no date for its worldwide launch but it's expected to be launched later this year. In a few months, Facebook would also try to make this app available on tablets.

Facebook would update the Facebook Home on monthly basis, adding new features and making it accessible to new devices.

Users who have the latest Facebook and Facebook Messenger app would be able to download this app on their Android handsets. When you launch this app first time on your handset, you can either choose to try this app once or always and see the magic.

Once you start using this app you'll realize that Cover Feed has replaced your home screen and lock screen. The Cover Feed displays photos, updates and notifications, all full screen. You can easily flip through to see more stories and double tap to like what you see.

In order to give the users a more homely experience, Facebook has partnered with brands like AT&T, Orange, Qualcomm, HTC, Samsung, Huawei, Sony, EE, ZTE, Lenovo and Alcatel.

The HTC First handset would be launched on April 12th and can be purchased for $99.99. [You can pre-order the HTC First handset here]
