Back in the old days, the milk man was an everyday sight, traveling down the streets of every city and town. While there are still some rural milk men in places such as India, for the most part this profession went by the wayside when the super market became a common part of life for most people. Why wait for someone to deliver your milk and have to bring it inside quickly before it either spoils or gets stolen when you can simply pick it up at your leisure?

There was a time when every time someone placed a call they would need to speak with an operator first. While there are still some specialized or small company operators, operational improvements in computing have taken away a lot of the technical requirements that such an individual used to fill. Being able to simply make a call and have it instantly go through on a nearly perfect basis just makes life simpler and gets things done faster.

Pumping gas is a simple job, but there was a time in which it was a common luxury for you to simply be able to ask for however much you wanted and have someone else get it for you. While there are still people who dress formally and do not like to do things for themselves, the chances of spilling gas on yourself are greatly lessened by today's automatically stopping pumps. As well, nowadays everyone has a stroke when the price of gas goes up by a dime or two -- the profit margins of this service simply are not there.

There was a time when typing was a serious skill. Before the days when every child of 4 could type 60 words per minute with one thumb, having a high quality personal secretary and typist at your disposal was considered both a necessity and a status symbol by a lot of businessmen. As well, before ORSYP workload automation and job scheduling, you had to have a person handling your scheduling. With computers, spell check and the fact that most people are typing and scheduling appointments before they learn how to walk nowadays, the dedicated typist is a distant memory.

The travel agency was once a major part of the middle class experience. Negotiating packages, arranging entire trip deals and handling the messy work of passports, travel arrangements and making sure you were staying in a good part of town were things that most people could not handle on their own. With a computer and a few minutes, nowadays almost everyone can handle these logistical considerations.
The world keeps changing, and sometimes what used to be a good job is eliminated as a part of that change. Fortunately, this is usually for the best.Author Bio:
