Love your pet dog or cat? But find it cumbersome to clean up after your pet poops? Or do you just ignore it, not bothering to clean it up? According to the EPA.

"1 gram of dog poop can contain 23 million fecal coli form bacteria, which are known to cause cramps, diarrhea, intestinal illness, and kidney disorders. The EPA estimates that two or three days worth of droppings from a population of about 100 dogs would contribute enough bacteria to temporarily close a bay and all watershed areas within 20 miles of it to swimming and shell fishing."

Introducing DoodyCalls, a service that provides regular pet waste removal services to homeowners, communities, apartment complexes etc. You can be rest assured that your property would be cleaned up on a regular basis by their technicians who will arrive uniformed and drive branded DoodyCalls trucks and are well trained and equipped for the job.

DoodyCalls was founded by Jacob and Susan D’Aniello in the year 2000 and adopted a franchising model in 2004. It has continued to grow over the years and can now boast of serving 23 states in the US with about 40 franchises. Jacob was good enough to take sometime out of his busy schedule and talk to us about the service. Read on to find out more about DoddyCalls.

1. Hello Jacob, please introduce yourself to our readers and tell them about Doody Calls.

Hi - I'm Jacob D'Aniello, co-founder and CEO of DoodyCalls. We are the largest systematized pet waste removal franchise in the United States, helping homeowners and communities nationwide to pick up where their pets "drop off."

2. What was the inspiration behind creating Doody Calls? Is there a story behind its creation that you would like to share with our readers?

I was commuting home from work one day, listening to a popular radio talk show, when on came an interview with someone who’s going on and on about his wonderful career picking up dog poop. I almost changed the channel, but then realized that the guy actually loved his job, earned a good living (claimed, in fact, to be making more than I was earning at the time), worked his own hours, said his clients loved him, and didn’t have to commute anymore.

It wasn’t rocket science or brain surgery, but it got me thinking. One week later, DoodyCalls was formed, we started placing classified ads in local papers, and the rest is history. In 2004 we began franchising and today we have grown to more than 45 franchises throughout the United States.

3. It must be a logistical nightmare coordinating between your clients and your various office staff and franchisees to clean up pet waste all round the year, without any service disruptions. What sort of hardware and software systems and practices have you put in place to keep it all going smoothly? Could you please elaborate?

We have a three-tiered system for ensuring everything runs smoothly throughout all of our DoodyCalls locations. First, we have a specialized computer routing and scheduling system in place, paired with live GPS-based maps, to create the most efficient routes possible. In the event that something unexpected happens - such as a team member calling out sick, for instance - our system is set up to allow for our other technicians to easily step in and pick up any slack. Finally, if we run into any major obstacles that completely stop us from being able to perform our duties - such as a snowstorm - our Customer Care Center steps in to minimize any disruption in customer satisfaction. We keep an open line of communication with our customers and we find they are very understanding as a result.

4. Could you please throw some light on the type of equipment, your staff uses to clean up a client’s place.

Our technicians are equipped with lobby dustpans, rakes, shovels, biodegradable bags, disinfectant cleaning solution and a good pair of gloves.  However, it's not the tools you have, but rather how you use them that makes all the difference.

5. How is DoodyCalls different from the other similar service providers, say like www.poopyscoop.com ?

DoodyCalls is committed to building the first national brand in pet waste removal. We are finding success in doing so by providing these services in the most efficient manner possible, combined with marketing more effectively than anyone else out there. Every time someone reads a story or hears about us, they can go to store, buy a shovel and bucket and compete with us, but there is really a lot to it.

6. What prompted you to get into a franchising model? How many total franchisees do you have?

Franchising provides the structure and opportunity to bring together like-minded entrepreneurs for the purpose of building a national brand. It's a highly scalable business model that allows for rapid expansion, and for the DoodyCalls concept, it makes perfect sense.

We currently have 48 franchise locations operating throughout the United States.

7. Just to understand your business model better - how would you define a “territory” for a franchisee? How many employee(s) does your typical franchisee hire?

Territories are determined by number of households. The average franchise territory has approximately 100,000 households.

Franchise owners typically employ 1-6 pet waste technicians, depending on the number of yards they service.

8. What other entrepreneurs or business honchos do you look upto? What are the sources of your inspiration?

I look up to successful entrepreneurs who are focused on building their business with honesty and integrity, and whose success comes from their ability to help other people achieve their goals.

9.  Do you  have plans to expand your operations to cover all the contiguous States in the US? Are you guys planning to expand out of America?

Our primary focus is currently the United States, with an initial focus on major metropolitan areas. We would like to provide service to every dog and cat owner in America.

10. What advice would you like to give to budding startups and entrepreneurs who think that they have a unique idea at hand?

Don't give up. Don't worry too much about what other people say. Focus on acquiring the business skills necessary to turn your idea into a successful venture.

Thank you Andrew for taking the time for this interview, we wish you the very best for the future.
