On Tuesday, Google finally unveiled its online storage service called 'Google Drive' that allows users 5GB of storage for free.

Google Drive is built into Google Docs, that allows users to share and collaborate documents, spreadsheets and presentations in real time. It supports Mac, PC and Android.

"Whether you’re working with a friend on a joint research project, planning a wedding with your fiancĂ© or tracking a budget with roommates, you can do it in Drive. You can upload and access all of your files, including videos, photos, Google Docs, PDFs and beyond." shares Sundar Pichai, Google's Sr VP, Chrome and Apps. Check out this introductory video to get a better understanding of this latest product by Google:

Google Drive's Notable Features

Create, share and collaborate

This cloud-based service lets users to not only create and share documents, spreadsheets or presentations, but also allows different users to make changes anytime, anywhere in real-time. Therefore, if one of the team member changes something in a particular documents, other shared users will be able to see those changes as they appear. Any comments or notifications can be seen by shared users instantly.

Keyword Filter

Making things easier, Google Drive allows users to search by keyword and add filters if required. Drive can also recognize text in scanned documents using Optical Character Recognition technology. It can also recognize objects from images that you take from your camera.

Storage

Users can use up to 5GB storage for free. Those looking for more space can upgrade to 25GB for $2.49/month, 100GB for $4.99/month and 1TB for $49.99/month. Once users upgrade to a paid account, their Gmail storage also expands to 25GB.

Gmail and Google Plus Integration

Those using Google Drive can consider email attachments to be an obsolete concept. Rather than an attachment, they can send a link from Google Drive in Gmail. Google Drive can also be used quite effectively in Google +, all the videos and images in Google Drive are automatically available in Google + and users can share them with their circles in just a click.

"Drive is also an open platform, so we’re working with many third-party developers so you can do things like send faxes, edit videos and create website mockups directly from Drive." shares Pichai, further adding, "This is just the beginning for Google Drive; there’s a lot more to come."

Google Drive is gonna change the way cloud computing is . With the kind
of traction cloud computing has been generating its been great. I also
feel some new tools which were launched at the recent Demo conference
could be an ideal competitor for Google drive such as CollateBox
http://www.collatebox.com/. Supposedly this is gonna be a stiff
    competition.
