"Randomness is the Nature. Shannnam is random." - is how Shannnam likes to describe itself. It is a Hong Kong based project which specializes in handcrafting designer accessories including jewelry and watches. The designer duo behind Shannnam are Chan Oi Yau Riyo and Kwong Ho Sun Howard. Now let's talk about their most interesting creation - fragmented chronicle rings.

Fragmented Chronicles is a collection of 100 rings; each ring telling a story of its own with a different landscape inside them. It seems that an affair is frozen in the ring that appears really beautiful.

We have one of its designers, Chan Oi Yau Riyo, with us to tell more about these surreal rings. Catch his interview below and some of the splendid designs from the series:


Riyo, let's start with a brief introduction of yours.

Shannnam is a designer project founded in early 2011 with the passion of hand-made accessories and miniature models. We got a day job to fulfill (working in advertising agencies) so we work on this project after work :). In Nov 2011, we had our first exhibition at the DesignBoom mart at Tokyo designer week. We are receiving pretty positive comments so far. And we just launched our online shop at www.shannnam.com.































Tell us about your awesome product 'Fragmented Chronicles'.

As the title suggest, each of them captures a moment of unique scene or story, sometimes it's happy, sometimes it's mysterious, or weird. We have created 20 something series and a total of 100 rings, it's up to the beholders to interpret the story behind each ring.













All of them are hand-made, with various materials such polyester resin. We first made a prototype using A/B resin and mold it using silicon. Then we use miniature models from German or Japanese train model makers, they should be around 1/160 in scale (N-scale). It took us some time to master the whole production process, yet we are still seeking for better techniques to improve the quality. Each of them takes around 2 days to build: from putting up the scene, injecting resin to the mold, waiting for it to dry, finishing and polishing. and the whole process is done by us two people.





























How did such a creative idea strike to you?

The first idea was to tell a story about time, we tried to put the miniatures models in some broken time pieces, however it seems the rooms for creativity is limited. So we tried to seek for another type of accessories and finally we came up with a ring.























What are the materials used in making these awesome rings?

We use materials from all over the world, silicon, polyester resin, German and Japanese miniature models.





 Which design among all is your favorite?

So far I liked everyone of them, but I am always looking forward to design something more strange or weird.
