Madeleine is a crafter based out of British Columbia, Canada. She has a beautiful store at Etsy, where she sells handmade jewelry. Almost all her designs are birds-centered that actually convey 'it must be nice to be a bird'.
Madeleine has been creating jewelry from a long time now but she has recently started up at Etsy; her jewelry is sold at two stores already. Some of the pieces are hand painted by her on wooden slices that are some one my favorites.
As she has just entered the E-commerce world and we are all about small business and self publishing, here we bring you another inspiring as well aspiring small business owner.
Catch her interview below and get to know how wonderful it is to sell online:
Madeleine, let's start with a brief introduction of yours.
Hi everyone! My name is Madeleine, I'm twenty one years old and live in British Columbia, Canada. Aside from my jewelry I also work at the City pool as a Lifeguard and swim instructor, and I work for a day care! So I definitely keep busy.
I was in art school last year however I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to do so I'm taking a year off this year and hope to do some traveling. Hopefully to Ireland!
When and how did 'It Must Be Nice To Be A Bird' form?
Well I've always been artistic and crafty, however it was just in the past few months when I started creating jewelry that I thought people might be interested in buying.
But how it really got started was when I was wearing one of my necklaces at an art show that was being hosted by a vintage store. I ended up talking to the owner and she said that she would be interested in carrying my stuff! So I think knowing that what I was making was good enough to be in a really good quality store was the push to continue the business.
What does it offer?
It offers a selection of high quality, hand made jewelry items. Mostly featuring birds of course, but other woodland creatures often sneak in there from time to time!
You've been making jewelry for a long time and recently you've stepped in E-commerce world. Tell us about the entire experience?
I really love Etsy, it gives me a broad range of people to sell to, and I get to hear feedback from people telling me what they like about my product.
However in general, marketing is definitely my least favorite part of the process. I've never liked sitting in front of a computer, and I have to do quite a bit of that with blogging and updating my Etsy account. I would rather be working hands on with something.
Though it has been a small journey so far, but we would love to know about the most fulfilling moment for you as a start-up.
A hard question... I suppose it was the other day when I saw a girl walking down the street wearing one of my necklaces. It was weird, I looked at her and then did a double take... she probably thought I was so weird staring at her.
It's also really cool when people approach you to do custom items. A lady asked me the other day to do a necklace with her cat in it, it's cool that I can connect with people in that way.
According to you, which item is the best at your shop or is your favorite?
Hmm... That is a very good question.
I really like "Correct Bird".
I love all my wooden slice necklaces. I believe that they are the most unique in my shop, not anyone else that I've seen has been using wooden slices to make necklaces. The wood comes from a tree in my backyard that my dad cuts up for me! Painting on wooden slices is very cool because even if I paint the same bird, they are always going to be different.
What are your future goals/plans for expanding your online presence?
I would just like to make more Etsy sales, possibly have some returning buyers. I would really love to have a blog and actually keep it up to date as well.
What message do you have for our readers?
Well I guess I would just like to say thanks for reading, and if you have a minute come check out my store!
Madeleine, thank you for sparing time to talk to us. I love your shop and wish you all the very best. I hope it grows each day!
