Stefan is a promising web designer and rising photographer hailing from Cluj-Napoca, Romania. He studies at Plastic Arts and Design University (UAD) in Cluj Napoca and currently working as a graphic and web designer; studying photography and video processing. Though he is in the process of learning photography, but his captures are quite professional.
What I like the most about his work is the concept he picks up. They are well-thought and needs a deep understanding. Taking an example, his latest series 'Brandversations' - we recently featured. Though they look simple but are pretty clever.
Well, all of his projects have this uniqueness and that intrigued me to contact him for an interview. Here the interview goes with some of my favorite Stefan's projects:
Stefan, let's start with a brief introduction of yours.
Hi all! My name is Stefan Asafti from Romania, Cluj-Napoca, the heart of Transilvania, where Dracula was born. :) I'm 26 and currently studying at the University of Art and Design, my second university. The first one was the Faculty of Civil Engineering, with no art classes :(. This is the reason why I wanted to quit, and so I did exactly that. I'm currently working as a senior designer and art director and also as a freelancer.
Have you always wanted to become an artist?
Yes, I did. Ever since I was a little kid, I was fond of drawing and painting, but later on I discovered other beautiful "parts in arts".
What is your first love - photography or web designing?
My first love was back when I was a kid :) Ohh she was beautiful! But after doing a bit of growing up I found webdesign, and later on photography started to grow as a hobby. I also study photography and video, and it's so nice to be able to combine all of them.

What influences the artist within you?
Good people and good music. (http://www.last.fm/user/awakedb)Have you always wanted to become an artist?

I've seen all your projects and I must say, you've got a fabulous creative side. I specifically liked your series 'The Right People'. I would love to learn more about it.
The Right People is still a work in progress. It's tough to say, the subject reflect bits and pieces of my life experiences with the good and the bad, and sometimes with the disappointments. I have to say that the title is an irony suggesting that the people you think were right for you eventually left you all alone. But hey, it's just an idea, a moment in time, we all have ups and downs :)
How did the idea of 'Brandversations' strike you? It is really interesting!
It's funny because I stumbled upon projects like Logo Reversals and Honest Logos before I did Brandversations and after putting it together I noticed how all projects communicate. I was filling a gap maybe.
How did the idea come to me? Well, I was watching some YouTube commercials with Coca Cola and Pepsi and I was thinking, "Damn, if it wasn't for Coca Cola, Pepsi wouldn't be where is it today and vice versa". So this idea grew on me, expanding it to other competitive brands and wanting to show a connection between their beautiful logos and their image. Of course there is much more to this project. I am so glad that it got to be so appreciated and hopefully my next project, episode 2 will be equally appreciated.
Tell us something about 'The Man I Was'. How did it happen to you?
This project happened because I found this man, Nicolae, a very interesting person when it comes to his character and attitude. Besides that, he has a really beautiful and intriguing story along with his daughter. I know him, he lives in my home town, he's a good friend and I wanted to tell his story. This project is still a work in progress - I also recorded an interview with him - and sometime soon I will finish it and maybe have an exhibition. The complete project is based on 25 images that illustrate this story.
Share the best compliment you've ever received for your work.
This is the hardest answer :) All I can say is: it's that constant feeling that you get in your stomach each time you do something good. Yes, it's a butterfly-ish effect.
Do you have dream project?
I have a lot of dream projects but nothing in particular for the moment. Maybe someday I will run my own design studio.
What message do you have for our readers?
An artist is created by the people, it's always good to be an artist for yourself as well and be careful when choosing a font. :)
