The other day when I was whiling away some time on my favorite site StumbleUpon, I stumbled on a website called 'Test Your Vocab'. And it has changed my misconception of assuming that I have a good vocabulary. :P
But now I think I need to start carrying a dictionary with me again. An eye-opening and not to mention fun website that measures your vocabulary level.
"TestYourVocab.com is part of an independent American-Brazilian research project to measure vocabulary sizes according to age education, and particularly to compare native learning rates with foreign language classroom learning rates." describes the website.
It works for small children and for adults as well, and can test vocabulary sizes from less than 100 words to more than 40,000 words.
"It functions by means of a quick three-part test: the first with a handful of words to determine the general vocabulary level, a second part with a larger but narrower selection of words to determine the vocabulary level with greater precision, and a final (optional) survey to collect statistical information."
So basically in the first step you'll be given a list of pretty simple words, and you have tick the words that you know (atleast one definition). In the first step, you will be elated, for you'l know most of the words.
But wait till you get to the next step, 'coz that is when you'll start having some doubts. And then in the final step you will be asked to fill in some basic details like your native language, place of birth, gender and all.
Once you are done, you will have a moment of truth, for it will give you a result, that might surprise you...pleasantly or shockingly.
So go ahead and give it a try...if nothing, it will motivate you to work on your vocabulary.
