Top3Skills, in the simplest terms, is a service that lets you highlight your top 3 skills. It not only allows you to put forward your skills but also you can ask your friends/connections to highlight your best 3 professional strengths. It might help you get better and more job offers as the potential employer would be able to see your best skills and you will be just a click away to get a right job; a job that fits perfectly with your attributes. And who doesn't want to know what are they best at.Its registeration is free and very easy. You can log in using your LinkedIn account and get started. Well, when I tried my hand on it, it rather became a fun exercise for me. ;)
Nuno Rodrigues is the founder of Top3Skills and we fired away a few questions on him. He has been very kind to spare some time for that. Check out his interview below to know everything about Top3Skills you want to:
Nuno, please introduce yourself to E-junkies.
I'm a Software Engineer from Portugal living in London and who works mostly for the Banking and Utilities sectors during the day and who launches web and mobile apps for the world during the night and weekends. Currently my main online projects are Top3Skills.com and InnerDinner.com.
Tell us about the fascinating concept of 'Top3Skills'.
Top3Skills works by letting professionals request their colleagues to pinpoint their Top 3 Skills. We call it a Quick Recommendations Service.
If you ask 50 of your connections to write the Top 3 Skills and professional strengths that best describe you, the skills will converge at the end and you'll get the *real* top 3 skills that best describe you. And if you are really skilled at something, you'll jump to the top of the Leaderboards! This is awesome for you because you will receive more job offers or at least you will have an argument to ask your boss for a raise.
How did this idea strike to you? What made you start 'Top3Skills'?
I had some colleagues requesting me to write them some recommendations through LinkedIn and honestly I thought what everyone thinks just before writing recommendations: "Boooooooring task!"
After this I just thought: why not describing someone in 3 skills and use that as a recommendation? After all, threewords.me was a huge success! And Top3Skills.com started...
You guys are in your initial stage. What kind of response has it received so far?
We are receiving nice feedback from our users. We already had some people from LinkedIn signing in so probably Top3Skills.com caught their eye.
Tell us about the pre-launch experience. What was the major difficulty?
We started by requesting our connections to use the application and making sure that everyone was happy with the interface was the hardest part. We are still updating our design to make sure User Experience gets better and better. Nowadays User Experience is everything.
What do you think..how 'Top3Skills' will bring a change in LinkedIn trend?
People don't have time to write long recommendations and they get bored by doing so. Having a quick recommendations service like Top3Skills.com will allow you to recommend each of your connections in just about 10 seconds.
Share the best incident that you encountered on this journey from conceiving the idea till present?
Integration with LinkedIn API. But in the end we got nice support from them. Thanks LinkedIn!
What methods or tools are you most rely on, for promoting 'Top3Skills'?
Asking our connections to spread the word, talking with bloggers and attending some conferences in London where we can talk about our idea.
What is your vision and dreams for 'Top3Skills' as a whole?
We would love to be able to include Top3Skills in LinkedIn as a Widget. In a way that you could show all the data visualization charts and graphs in your LinkedIn profile.I am also aware that the future can be short because LinkedIn can copy the concept of Top3Skills and implement it in their platform by their own.
Since you've recently started up, one can look up to you for the best advice. What message do you have for them?
-Choose your team very well. This is very important.
- Listen to the people that don't like your idea and try to find a way to make them change their mind. Turn a "NO" into a "YES".
- Always ask feedback from the public and try to attend all their requests. The application is for them, not for you.
Nuno, Top3Skills certainly catches one's eye as it uses a great concept. Thank you so much for talking to us. We wish you all the very best!
