A few days ago we featured Studio Ve's recently launched Perspective Clocks here on our blog. Yes, those unique clocks that are comprised of straight white lines.

Well, as we already know Perspective Clocks is a series of five clocks where straight white lines rotate over a plain black face, resembling a drawing study on a canvas. Each face has a slightly different ending, emphasizing its own character.

"Some people are systematic, approaching challenges step by step. Other view things from different angles, while some people focus directly on the target. We wanted to create a clock for just about everyone."

Now talking about Studio Ve - it is a industrial design studio based in Israel, co-founded by Ben Klinger and Shay Carmon in 2010, who share a common passion and that is wall clocks.

According to them, "
From the beginning of our joint work, we bring our notions into life, involved in the whole process - starting with the concept, design phase, continuing with production and spreading them out."

Studio Ve's first two clocks, Manifold Clock and Lithe Clock were a instant success and this is what inspired Ben and Shay to work on a new project called the Perspective Clocks that reflect upon the different ways that people deal with the different issues that they face in their day to day lives. Each clock in this series is composed of straight lines and demonstrates a different approach to the dimension of time. They initially launched a Kickstater campaign to raise funds to make these clocks, which was successfully funded a few days ago. Congrats guys :)

To know more about the Perspective Clocks we got in touch with the Ben and here's what he has to say:

Happy reading!

1. Hi Ben! Please introduce yourself to our readers.

I'm an 30yrs old, from Tel-Aviv, Israel.

2. What is Studio Ve? What inspired you and Shay to co-found it?

Studio Ve is a small Industrial Design which focuses on wall clocks. We founded it in 2010, just after we finished our design studies.

"Ve" means "And" in Hebrew. We both combine our passion for design with our fields of interest - Shay has a masters in Mathematics and teaches in the university, and I am a kindergarten teacher.

Our motto is "We don't want to change the world, we want to make it more interesting".

3. What sort of products do you and Shay design at Studio Ve? What aspect of the product do you focus more on, concept or design?

At first, we split our time between concept and products. In the past year or so, we decided that the studio will focus on time telling objects.

4. Tell us something about the 'Perspective Clocks'? What is the concept behind them? And one thing that I'm dying to ask, what's with the straight white lines?

This series is an indirect decedent of our previous clock designs. We used metal rods in the Manifold & Lithe clocks. This material is available in our studio, so one day we just played with compositions using this material only and created 20 versions of clocks. Then we selected the five we liked best. When we made the transition from design to production, we changed the hands' material to ABS, but the basic idea remains. This is because of the force the metal formations put on the movement.

We'd like portray a world with different perspectives. The hands of the clocks are visualized by formations of straight lines, creating a unique relationship in each clock. These relationships reflects our diversity towards time - some are focused, some organised and others look at things from many angles. There really is a clock for everyone out there - we're trying to find them.

5. How are the 'Perspective Clocks' different from the regular wall clocks that we use at our homes?

I think the biggest difference is the purpose of the clocks. Regular clocks serve as time telling objects, and their design is secondary. We think that design can affect the perception of time and make clock that people can connect emotionally to.

6. Why only 5 clocks in the series? Can we expect to see more of such clocks in the future?

We had many version of these clocks, and narrowed it down to five. Manufacturing them is a challenge, because we have to meet minimum order quantities. I can promise you we'll have more clocks, they just won't be part of this series.

D Clock - Different Angles

K Clock - Systematic Movement
P Clock - Burst from Inside
V Clock - Focus on Target
Z Clock - Wander Around

7. Tell us about your Kickstarter campaign and the road ahead for the 'Perspective Clocks'?

Kickstarter is a great platform for designers. The "all or nothing" approach gives small businesses the opportunity to determine if there's a market for the product, estimate sales and receive funds even before a single unit is made or an order is placed with the manufacturer.

We keep coming back (this is our third project) because we believe this the best way for indie designers to get exposure.

8. How do you plan to promote the 'Perspective Clocks'? What do you think is the ideal mix of social, online and offline promotion? What about word-of-mouth promotion?

Since we're based in Israel, our promotion is mostly online. The target audience here is not large and we found that most of our clients are from the US. We have a social presence on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.

9. What other designers do you look up to? If you could peek inside the toolbox of any one other contemporary designer, whose would it be and why?

I've had the pleasure to see Kobi Perez work. He is a very talented Israeli jewellery designer, that I've learned a lot from. Soon we'll have a mutual project together.

10. Personally, what activities do you enjoy in your free time? Are you more of an indoor or outdoor guy?

I love nerdy stuff buy also a running. I wear threadless shirts, order something online almost every day, but I love the outdoors. I ran my first marathon two years ago, and I'm now getting ready for a second, with my wife!

11. What are your future plans? Are you working on any other products right now.

We'll be visiting Ambiente Fair next month, to promote our line of clocks. The 2014 road map includes releasing two new products next year: one clock and one not :)

12. What advice would you like to give to aspiring and budding entrepreneurs/designers?

The best advice I can give is to just put your idea out there and don't fear. The worst that can happen is you'll fail. And its something we all experienced and makes us better.

Ben, thanks for such an extensive interview. It was a great experience learning about you. Wish you good luck!

FYI, The Perspective Clock is estimated to start shipping in May 2014. You can pre-order your favorite clock from this set for $55.
