Time and again we have been talking a lot about infographics, things like using infographics to drive traffic to one's website, generate leads and we also listed 10 handy tools to create interesting infographics. Having talked about these things it got me wondering if there is a list of rules that one should keep in mind while creating infographics.
Well-designed and interesting infographics never go unnoticed, in fact if shared properly they can go viral in a blink. But the question still remains - What is it makes an infographic interesting and popular?
Prior stumbling upon this very interesting infographic that I'm about to share with you guys, I used to think that the choice of colors and the right layout is what makes the infographics popular. But I was so wrong!
According to Avalanche Infographics who are specialized in data-visualization and designing creative infographics, "Information + Story + Design = Infographics. This is how the equation may be written to prove the success and legitimacy of this steeply upward sloping field... If we do not know what our goal is or whom to address the message, then we will be only reaching in the dark and have a little chance that our work will be rewarded. It is important to present the relevant data in a structured format, for without rhythm and ergonomics we can expect nothing less then the rapid departure of visitors and ultimate failure."
I know it's a cliche but seriously creating infographics is no rocket-science. Anyone can do it, you-me, anyone! You don't need to be an artist or a graphic designers, you just need to follow the following rules (compiled by the folks at Avalanche Infographics):
1. Identify Your Goal: Before beginning the design process, be clear on your goal i.e. WHat do you want to accomplish through your infographic? Want to generate leads, spread awareness or just entertain people. Answering this question first would help you decide what sort of information to include in your infographic.
2. Identify Your Audience: Identify what people do you want to reach and make sure that the infographic attracts them, speaks the language they talk and deals with the issues they care or feel about.
3. Create A Core Message Or Story: If you want your infographics to be hard-hitting then you need to focus on one central idea. Don't just randomly choose information to be included in the infographic. Select a theme and use data that supports it.
4. Be Relevant: Select a new topic, keep your information short and simple and devide your content into 5-10 blocks so that audience doesn't spends more that 3 minutes reading it.
5. Research Well: Just don't quote information for the sake of it, be sure of your source and before including a particular piece of information cross check it. You can collect data from Google, Social data, Stats and Geographical information.
6. Make Your Header Persuasive: Believe it or not 90% of people go through an infographic because of its header and title. So make sure to make your header arouses curiosity.
7. Make An Eye-Catching Design: A well-designed infographic has a sure shot at going viral. Keep the following points in mind people to understand your infographic:
9. Sources: Make your infographic look authentic, don't forget to cite the sources and give credit.
10. Make A Summary: Just don't plainly share the infographic on your company blog or website. Add a summary, explain what the infographic is about and the conclusion that you have reached after doing the research.
