Are you a girl searching for that perfect blog that talks about everything from fashion to beauty, DIYs to products?

Well, whatever your answer is but there is one fashion-beauty-lifestyle blog that you ought to checkout and that's Gurlinterrupted.

The name rings a bell, doesn't it? Remember the movie Girl, Interrupted that was released in 1999, starring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie. Well, this blog has nothing to do with the movie, let's say there is just one similarity (checkout answer no. 2).

Gurlinterrupted is a fashion-beauty blog by Angie Fredatovich. Angie is a New Zealand-based freelance writer, qualified makeup artist, a fashion buyer, music enthusiast, a book lover and a lover of the color green.

Through this blog, Angie blogs about fashion, beauty and anything pretty that catches her eyes. She shares her knowledge and understanding of the world of fashion and beauty - which according to us is perfect.

Happy reading!

1. Hi Angie, tell us something about yourself?

I'm a freelance writer, qualified makeup artist, once-upon-a-time fashion buyer, insomniac, perfectionist, music enthusiast, professional people watcher and lover of books - not kindles! I love to write and immerse myself in a world of fashion & beauty. I love things - just things, ya know? Pretty things that I just have to have - anything pretty that catches my eye. I am passionately in love with the colour green!! I've always loved green, even as a child. My mother said this would wane as I got older. It did not!!

2. What is Gurlinterrupted? What inspired you to start blogging? Curious about the etymology of your blog's name.

Gurlinterrupted.com encompasses the miscellaneous musings of a girl interrupted by fashion, beauty and anything pretty that catches my eye. That's what it's all about, beautiful fashion, outfits of the day, DIY, my love of all things beauty - makeup and skincare tips, cult-classics, new products about to hit the market. Beautiful homewards, music I'm loving, books I'm reading, you name, I love to write about it.

I was inspired to start blogging because I've always LOVED writing. In high school (I swear I wasn't a nerd) I opted to take Advanced English and Classical Studies rather than have free study periods - thats how much I loved writing! When I started work full-time (10 years in Events & Sponsorship Mgmt. and PR), work colleagues and friends would often ask where I got my shoes or clothes, what did I think would be the next big trend, or ask advice on what outfit they should wear or how to put a certain 'look together', or if I could give them some makeup tips. After a while it became so frequent that my partner and close friends would say, you know you should start your own blog and then you wouldn't have to repeat yourself several times a day. At that time I laughed it off, but actually, it kind of made sense - it would be easier to just put it all out there and if they liked what I was writing, they could follow me, if they didn't, heckthey didn't have to tune in right?! Over the last couple of years I have been a fashion/beauty contributor for several large e-zines here in New Zealand (I still contribute to them now) and just over a year ago I bit the bullet and got my own blog up and running to allow myself the freedom of writing whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted - no editing my work for certain audiences.

Gurlinterrupted - the name, came about for two reasons. The movie Girl Interrupted staring Angelina Jolie (hey, we're both Ange's as well) is one of my favourite movies - I still love the movie just as much today and I think Angelina Jolie is fabulous! But the other reason I chose Gurlinterrupted as my blog name; and this is the main reason… my superpower is 'distraction'! The power to be so easily distracted and 'interrupted' by anything pretty that catches my eye is seriously a superpower! My friends and work colleagues would often laugh at how I managed to turn a boring meeting or conversation into a conversation about something fashion or beauty related. Something would pop into my head that I had recently seen, or someone would walk past with a fabulous outfit and I would be completely interrupted by it. It became apparent that I really was "a Gurl Interrupted by anything pretty that catches my eye". And so Gurlinterrupted.com was born!

3. Being a freelance writer and a qualified makeup artist, how easy or difficult was it for you to step your blog?

Given I was already writing for several digital magazines it was actually really easy to start my own blog. Freaking out about whether anyone would actually read or follow my blog, that was difficult to get my head around. I basically had to focus on writing about what I knew and loved and had a mentality of 'hey just write because you want to and if no one reads it, so what, you are doing what you love'. I am blessed to have such a supportive partner, family and friends that have encouraged me to write and thankfully my blog has grown quite successfully and pretty damn quickly.

4. According to you what's that one fashion advice for women that never gets old?

Money can't buy style! (don't choose something simply because it has a label attached to it). Wear it because you love it and it makes you feel good.

5. What is the 'Beautiful Editorials' label on your blog about?

I simply love 'beautiful things'. I am inspired by the beautiful editorials I see online and in print. I want to surround myself with beautiful things. When I see a beautiful editorial, I'm completely inspired - the colours, the clothes, the makeup… I just have to include it on my blog - it makes me happy every time I look at them.

6. How are you promoting your blog? What do you think is the ideal mix of social, online and offline promotion? What about word-of-mouth promotion?

I think the key to promoting your blog is to write about what you truly know and love. If you aren't writing about what you know and love, it will show through in your writing. Great content is the best promotion for bloggers. Write it and they will come. But seriously, that is how it works. Yes, of course having all the social media platforms in place does help, and obviously you must have some form of SEO, but it's all about good content. Word of mouth is also great and again, a great support network of friends and family does help. But I also ensure I promote myself by writing the best content that I can, I immerse myself in fashion & beauty constantly, whether that be online or print media or just street-style inspiration; and I do ensure that I attend as many fashion, beauty, lifestyle events that I possibly can - I have literally spent some days, morning to night, dashing from one event to the next to ensure I catch a glimpse of every single one to stay at the top of my game. Where time allows, networking at these events doesn't hurt either.

7. 5 must-have things on your work desk?

My MAC Notebook, my iPhone, an old-school notebook and pen - I'm a list writer :-) (that counts as one right item right?), fresh flowers, a pin-board to pin-up items that inspire me - whether that be pages torn from magazines, a scrap of fabric, a makeup look, or just a key word that's inspired a blog post, I will jot it down and pit it on up there.

8. When not blogging, what other activities do you indulge in? What do you find most relaxing? What is the best compliment that you've received so far for your work?

I love to shop, it should be considered a hobby and quite frankly an olympic sport - I would bring home the gold! This is an activity that makes me feel good and at the same time - it's relaxing and exciting! I also love people-watching - I enjoy taking my MAC to a local cafe and can spend hours in a window seat at a cafe, writing and people watching. I also love all things vintage and antique - I'm quite the collector of antique books and writing slopes, through to jewellery and clothes so I'mquite partial to a day of trawling antique/vintage stores. To truly relax and indulge I am a huge fan of visiting the spa for back massages and pedicures. The biggest compliment I've received so far on my work - it would have to be that I've been told I'm relatable in my writing style, that apparently I write just as I speak, I'm not entirely sure that's a good thing ha ha, but it's nice that people think I'm relatable. Also from those that follow my blog, they like that I cover a wide range of items, from gucci to chain store, I don't opt for just one style or price-range, I cover a wide spectrum of simply beautiful things that I truly love.

9. What are on the top shelves of your inspiration library right now? This can be anything from blogs, books and magazines to vintage catalogues/manuals, etc.

Ohhh I'm loving Fankie magazine - I've actually just signed on for a year long subscription - it's jam packed with inspirational goodies from fashion to DIY, pretty paper samples to engaging articles. I also love Marie Claire, Elle, Glamour, Madison and of course - Vogue. Books - I'm loving 'The Goddess Guide' and 'Like I give a frock' and I'm currently reading Dan Brown's latest novel - Inferno. I have numerous antique books of which I'm inspired by, purely by looking at their beautiful covers and spines - I see these every day as I glance up at the shelves that run the circumference of my office. The shelves sit just below the ceiling. And I have to include the manual for my latest vintage purchase - my pale blue, circa 1974, Brother De Luxe typewriter.

10. What are your future plan as a blogger?

To just keep growing! I want blogging to be what I do full time, forever! I truly love it more than anything (clearly this doesn't include people) - this is what I always want to be doing - surrounded by fashion, beauty and anything pretty that catches my eye and to be able to spend my days writing about it all.

11. What advice would you like to give to a budding and aspiring bloggers?

Be true to you and don't compare yourself, nor what you write about, to others. Don't write about a topic just because you think that's what's working for another blogger - If you are not truly passionate about what you are writing about - it will show through. Blog because you LOVE it and LOVE what you are writing about. Don't be disheartened by a slow or small following, we all have to start somewhere and eventually, over time, YOU WILL get there - just stick with it!!

Thanks Angie for taking out the time and doing this interview with us. We'd like to wish you the very best for the future.
