It is an interesting and creative crowd-sourcing project where fans are encouraged to create their own design for Orbit gum, based on their Facebook profile. The app pulls numerical data from a user's profile to generate a custom gum pack design that is unique for each individual. "All fans – even without being an artist or designer – can turn their Facebook life into a work of art."
Once a user has completed the process of generating a unique design, he/she can then request votes for their personalized package designs, the winners' designs may be later seen on store shelves.
Orbit Spotlight Series is in its second phase, last year a lot of college students participated in this series to create custom design for Orbit's latest gum flavor: Melon Remix. "The contest successfully generated Orbit gum’s first ever crowd-sourced pack designs." Eight winners were chosen, whose designs can be seen on Orbit packs across many stores including Wal-Mart. You can check out the winners here.
The brand leverages infographics technology and designing skills of digital artist Joshua Davis from Evolution Bureau (EVB), who is known for building algorithm systems.
Do visit Orbit's Facebook page to participate in this contest, or to get an idea of how creative campaigns can give fruitful results. Please note that, although anyone can generate a pack design, but only US residents can enter their design for a chance to win a spot on store shelves. Orbit is expected to introduce up to 60 new pack designs in the year 2012.
