Why Should Artists Blog?

Posted: 5/12/2011

If you are a regular reader with us, then you know how much we love to talk about artists and their ingenuity. Some of these artists are hard core entrepreneurs as well, while most of them are still in the process of comprehending how to blend their artwork with online business, social media and art communities online.

Although nothing can beat or replace art galleries, but in this day and age it is imperative for artists to make their presence felt in the virtual world as well. In fact, it can prove out to be quite a lucrative outlet to connect with your fans and potential buyers.

Like I said, an artist needs to integrate online business, social media and art communities online; as far as online communities are concerned, there are websites like Behance Network,  devianART and ConceptArt. For online business transactions, a website of your own is pretty suffice, and when it comes to social networking there are endless options to choose from, with of course, Twitter and Facebook on top of the list. But if you truly want to connect with your fans, followers, admirers, art enthusiasts and potential customers, then I strongly recommend that you must start blogging.

This reminds me of thought provoking words by Lori McNee from FineArtTips.com:

“Professionals artists and novices alike would agree that art lends itself to solitude. From the studio to the gallery – both creating and viewing art tends to be an individualized experience. But is this a necessity of the field, or just a bad habit?”

Although I agree that solitude is something that every artist needs and wants to get their creative process going, but I also believe that every artist should find some time to reach out to the world. And there is so much that you can do with a blog: you can write articles related to the niche of your artwork, you can share your ideas, your inspiration, publish images, share your creative process, receive, feedback from those who appreciate your work and connect with endless creative people all over the world.

Blogging is dominated two well established blogging platforms: Blogger & WordPress, but you can also consider Tumblr, which is gaining quite a popularity these days and is perfect choice for micro-blogging.

Here are my top reasons why every artist must blog:

  • Blogging reminds people that you actually exist when they see your posts being published on regular basis.
  • It gets you out of your comfort zone and shows that you not just another loner artist.
  • Sharing your ongoing projects and ideas helps in bringing a little more prospective to your forthcoming endeavors.
  • You exponentially widen your audience reach, and don't have to succumb to geographical barriers.
  • You can become a mentor or a teacher to budding or aspiring artists, and trust me...it is a very satisfying and serene feeling.
  • Other than connecting with those who appreciate your work, you also connect with other art blogs and fellow artists.
  • From business point of view, your blog (assuming that you already have a website) can lead to a higher ranking in Google search results, and eventually increasing traffic to your website, thereby improving your sales figures.
  • An artist faces many instances when people fail to understand their work, through blogging you let your voice out...and explain your work (other than the 'about me' page on your website). You can give in-depth understanding how one can perceive your creativity. Who can do it better than the artist himself/herself?
  • It helps you grow as an artist.
  • You become a brand rather than just another individual artist.
  • Blog documents your work process, your achievements and creations over the period of time. And when you run out of ideas, you can always look back, which helps in fueling your creativity.
  • Blogging carries a huge motivational factor, because once you start a new project and share it with your readers, you impose a deadline for your self. And the fear of disappointing your followers can turn out to be pretty motivating.
  • Reading other blogs, and connecting with like-minded people not only triggers inspiration but also catalyzes creativity.

These are my top reasons why an artist must consider blogging and I would love to hear you views on the topics that you can share in the comment section below. Allow me to point out that one must not get too engrossed in to it because it does get a little overwhelming at times and too much of it might hamper your artwork. All you need to do is have a schedule set up for yourself, which helps in concentrating on your work and does not affect your productivity.
