Pieter Brenner is a Dutch-German designer who has recently made headlines that talk about an incredible project by him called 'Sugarchair'. A beautiful multi coloured chair that is wholly made up of sugar is the most innovative concept I've ever came across. Not only that, it is claimed to be the first design chair made out of pure sugar.
Pieter has worked for many years in many countries. “Brenner was never a typical student”, describes his website. And I think his mind boggling creation 'Sugarchair' truly justifies the statement.
When I first read about it, I couldn't really believe my eyes. That even made me more curious and instead of featuring this wonderful project, I contacted Pieter, the very intelligent designer for an interview. He has been kind enough to spare some time for that. Read his interview below to know about the inception, inspiration and much more about his applauding artwork:
Pieter, please introduce yourself to E-junkies.
Hello, my name is Pieter Brenner, I am a designer and I want to change the world through my designs.
Your 'Sugarchair' project is certainly a masterpiece! How is it made?
The sugarchair is designed completely out of sugar, the chair contains about 60 pounds of sugar. In general it is very simple, in detail it is quite tricky. First of all the sugar must be mixed with starch and protein so that you can shape. After it the chair sugar has dried, you can add the colour (of course it is eatable colour as well) to the chair like a glaze. Believe me, it takes a lot more than reading this lines....
How did this idea of making a sugar chair strike to you? What inspired you?
Generally I am looking far away from design newspapers and magazines. There is just the danger of too much incest...
I think good ideas come to you, when you are ready for them. So you better prepare to yourself...
The sugar chair has been called an iconic masterpiece! How do you feel about it?Did you ever think it'd become as famous as it has become now?
Yes, I am quite happy that it had become an iconic masterpiece. But it certainly was designed to be an iconic masterpiece.
How much time it took you to complete this awesome chair? How challenging it was?
It took about 6 month until the first chair was ready. The challenge was very interesting, because nobody has done it before. Therefore I had a very good manufacturing cooperation that had the patience to experiment a lot. In the beginning we had to fix some tricky production problems, but there are no such problems that can’t be solved by a designer. .
Would you like to share your future projects with us?
I have a few projects ahead. One of them I will share with you:
There are so much design things that are designed to be in a museum, but actually there is no appropriate museum for all this design stuff. At the moment I am working on a concept for a museum that can contain all these designs and maybe also a space for the designers...This project will be fabulous...
Share the best compliment you've ever received for your work.
Interest in general is a very nice compliment!
Did you take any formal training in design?
No. Any university hasn’t told thinking in a right context. You have to develop it on your own.
Do you consider this project to be a stepping stone in your career?
No, I don’t think in step stones, but maybe this is also told by university (laughs). I am just walking ahead listening to my pace. When something turns out, it’s perfect, but if it isn’t, I am not going to be angry at all. (Theoretically). If nothing is turning out I am always designing a shelf. This crappy pursuit always makes me think of something better.
What is your vision for 'Design' as a whole? What is the definition of Design in your dictionary?
Design is an object. Design is just chairs. Design is everything. Our biography is design. Design is just for wealthy people. Design is for the stars. Design should make a change. Design can change the world.
What are the other things that interests you? What do you do in spare time?
I am spending very nice spare time far away from my computer! Hanging around in malls and McDonalds can make you sick sometimes.
What message do you have for our readers?
Think by yourself!
