Recycling can turn to be quite a lucrative business idea considering the fact that raw materials hardly cost anything, and in the process you are making your much required contribution towards the environment and taking some load off those guys working in landfills.
We have always appreciated the noble cause of recycling and upcycling, especially those business owners who can turn recycling into an enlivening experience and bring creativity 'n innovation into it.
In past we've featured creative recycled products like Eternal Flame sculptures, Placemats created from discarded billboards and posters, Deckstool, a stool created from broken skateboards and recycled toys from cans and tins. In this post, we feature 5 business ideas that have taken recycling to a whole new level.
EMECO'S 111 NAVY CHAIR
When you look at these chairs, they seem nothing more than ordinary, but when you know what they're made of, you can't help and appreciate the idea behind it. 111 Navy Chair is made out of one hundred and eleven recycled Coca-Cola plastic bottles.
Emeco is a well known company with years of experience in making chairs, and when Coca-Cola approached them with the idea of recycling their thousands of plastic bottles, Emeco took the opportunity to create 111 Navy Chairs to encourage recycling. "When you recycle a plastic bottle, you're doing something good. When you recycle 111 of them, you're doing something great." shares Emeco.
ELVIS & KRESSE
A business idea that has turned a life-saving machinery to environment-saving product. Elvis and Kresse create life-style accessories from old and de-commissioned fire brigade hoses. Now who could've imagined, that those gigantic fire hoses would end up on a pretty lady's shoulder. They make bags, wallets, belts, straps, iPhone cases, key rings card holders and even cuff-links. You've gotto love their candle stick holders.
"After a distinguished career fighting fires and saving lives, were otherwise destined for landfill. We scrub away all the soot, grease, and everything else that builds up after 25 years of active duty, and in the process reveal a truly remarkable, truly green textile." shares the couple. And whats more, they donate 50% of their profits to Fire Fighters Charity.
TEDDY LUX
This is one of the most adorable recycling business idea I've come across. Brooke Serson Cernonok is the designer behind this who recycles and transforms old cashmere sweaters into cute and cuddly teddy bears. This idea came into being when Brooke was too lazy knit a bear for her expecting friend, so she turned to her old cashmere sweater and chopped it off to create her first Teddy Lux.
"My background is in graphic design and illustration; my philosophy for Teddy Lux Cashmere is the mixing of comfortable traditionals with modern applications. Environmentally sound practices and philanthropy are important cornerstones." shares the designer.
HELLO REWIND
All of us have those t-shirts lying in our closet that are too old to be worn but too close to our heart to let go. So what Hello Rewind does is, it turns those t-shirts into trendy laptop sleeves. Their process is very simple, you order your laptop sleeve, they send you a pre-paid envelope, you put your shirt in it and send it back to them. Within weeks, your witty, cute or hilarious t-shirt turns into a witty, cute or hilarious laptop sleeve.
A notable aspect about their business is that, through these t-shirts Hello Rewind is on a mission to help sex trafficking victims by providing them skills like sewing, learning English and business skills. These t-shirts are hand-crafted by those victims, whose number is almost 17,000 per year in US alone. "We want to show sex trafficking survivors that rescue is not the end and that there is hope for something better in their lives. After supporting the sex trafficking survivors involved with Hello Rewind, the remaining profits are recycled back into the company so that we can grow the business to support even more women." shares Jess Lin.
WiTHiNTENT
A clever and one-of-a-kind business idea that creates products like buntings, colorful bags and jackets from tents. Their business depends on those festival goers who tend to leave their tents behind for party organizers to handle and dump in the landfill.
"While we enjoy making lovely clothing from unloved tent fabric WiTHiNTENT does not offer an excuse to leave a tent behind at the end of any festival. The best way in which we can reduce waste is to tidy up after ourselves and reuse the items we own, please remember to pick up after yourselves." they share.
