Freelancers have taken advantage of eCommerce which according to Wikipedia is “commonly known as e-comm, e-commerce or eCommerce, consists of the buying and selling of products or services over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks”. They’ve setup blogs and websites to sell their products and services which range from graphic design to eBooks; from web design to paintings; and everything in between. The explosion of eCommerce has encouraged freelancers to be and do more.
It used to be that freelancers would advertise their products and services through word-of-mouth. This is still a viable means of advertising and marketing; however, eCommerce makes it easy for freelancers to market their work. With the click of a button, they can set-up a website and sell their products and services. They can also use paid advertising to drive traffic to their website. The alternative is to carefully select ‘keywords and phrases’ that people use when they search the internet. Either way, eCommerce is encouraging more and more freelancers to pursue their passion with fervor and make money while doing it.
5 Reasons Freelancers Take Advantage of eCommerce
Encourages business between B2B (business to business) and B2C (business to consumer). Obviously freelancers can market to businesses and consumers. For example, freelance writers can market their copywriting services to businesses while marketing their first novels to consumers. Freelance writers use their freelance writing websites to promote their writing services while their ‘author’ websites promote their books. It’s a win-win situation!
It’s economical. Many freelancers will use popular blogging platforms such as WordPress because it’s free, easy to use and customize if you’re experienced with web language (HTML). The alternative is to hire a web designer. A website can cost $500 or more, depending on how in depth the site is. Spending $500 is a nominal fee; your website will eventually pay for itself because of the sales you make from your products and services.
Reach more clients and customers. Traditional commerce limits the number of people you can reach. There is no limit with eCommerce. Freelancers can sell their products and services to millions of people around the world.
Data is readily available. You can easily track who’s buying what and why they’re buying it. Programs such as Google Analytics provide freelancers with pertinent data such as what search engines and keywords people use to find their websites. The data is invaluable to freelancers because they can ‘tweak’ keywords and meta tags if the ones they’re using are not performing. This is why it’s imperative that freelancers have a basic understanding of analysis.
Social media. Networking is a must! Freelancers take advantage of ‘free’ social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and others. The key is to find your ‘authentic’ voice when connecting with others. These and other social networks are easy to use when building an online presence. You can ‘tweet’ blogs posts, articles, and newsletters. You can create a Facebook Fan Page to update followers about your products and or services. You can hold contests and give away prizes. Coupons are a great way to generate ‘buzz’ about a freelance business. Test these tactics and discover what works best for you.
FYI: Experts claim that 2011 will be a banner year for eCommerce; new areas are growing. Freelancers who use eCommerce can reach new and existing clients and customers with their products and services. The best part is there’s no overhead – this saves you money!
Freelancers reach customers around the world enabling them to become international; they can reach remote areas in the U.S. You can get ahead by paying attention to the behaviors of businesses and consumers. Review your analytics and make changes accordingly. If you’re not taking advantage of eCommerce, you’re missing out on the chance to take you and your work global.
