Merel Karhof created this wonderful wind knitting machine that harnesses wind to create beautifully knitted tube scarves.
The machine continues to knit a long tube of scarf as long as the wind's blowing, using vintage sock knitting machine. From time to time the long scarf is taken out and rounded of individually. "Each scarf has its own label which tells you in how much time it has been knitted and on which date." explains Merel.

This idea occurred to Karhof during one of her regular walks when she noticed strong wind blowing in surrounding streets, "While I was trying to walk in a straight line from the Royal College of Arts towards Kensington Olympia, I was confronted with lots of cul de sacs. Interesting to me was the way wind blows in and out these spaces, unlike in normal streets where the wind blows only in one direction. Looking at this phenomenon, I set my self the brief to use this 'free' energy source and create a product with it. I created a mechanical wind powered knitting machine, which knits fast when there is lot of wind and slow when there is not lot of wind."
