As a result of OpenID initiative, Google account holders can now log into image hosting site Flickr using Google username and password instead of Yahoo.

You may wonder as to why a Yahoo owned company will let its users use Google account on their site, but if you think about it, it will only result in larger number of members for Flickr because now users don't have to create a special Yahoo account and number of Google users are unbeatably very high in number. Do we smell competition for Picasa?

On Thursday, Denise Leung from Flickr announced:
"For existing Flickr account holders, you'll still need to sign in with your Yahoo! ID, but we're rolling out a few new features to make signing in easier for you as well. You can sign-in to your account without having to leave the page you were on, making it easier to post comments, favorite photo or add someone as a new contact."

"We are pleased to announce Google as our first partner, but stay tuned as we continue to add even more in the future" Denise adds.

And this is a two way street, since Google has also welcomed Yahoo users via OpenID feature and lets them sign up for a Google account in a one-click process for anyone with Yahoo account. The day is not far when anyone can log in anywhere with just one username and password...eGlobalization perhaps.

If you already have a Flickr account, you will need to use Yahoo details to sign-in, however Flickr promises that signing-in process will be made much easier in days to come.
